BOWLING & CROQUET.
LINWOOD CLUB. The annual meeting of the Linwood Bowl ing and Croquet Club -n-ns held last night, Mr B. Pcnlington presiding over a good at tendance of members.
The annual report and balance-sheet showed that the excess of assets over liabilities whs-£4Ol 7s 6d, aVid there was a credit balance in the working account of £45 9s •Cd. The membership of the bowling section was 82, and that of the croquet section 23. In outlining the progress of the season, the report stated that the club had had an. exceptionally successful year, and a great amount of work had been done about the greens and on the croquet lawns. These areas were now looking very well, and promised to be in fine order for the coming season.
The chairman, in moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet, congratulated the secretary on the comprehensive mannti in which he had outlined the year's operations. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. According to notice given, Mr J. E. Allen moved: "That Eiile 9, Clause B, be amended to allow the president to be a member of the Match Committee."
In speaking to the motion. Mr Allen fiid the president's presence on the Match Committee would be invaluable to the club. He considered that the president should be at the head of all committees. Mr C. Dickson contended that the motion was out of order because the rules stipulated that the Match Committee conld be of only three members, and the amendment would add a further member to that committee. Mr E. Healey seconded the motion pro forma. Mr J. A. Clarke said the president could be one of the three members of the committee. He strongly favoured the proposal that the president should be one of these three members. Mr Allen jaid he was quite prepared to withdraw his motion because he wished the president to become a fourth member of the committee. The motion was accordingly- withdrawn. Next Tear's Contest. A letter was received from the Christchurch Bowling Centre asking the club to make suggestions as to the form of next season's inter-club competitions. The chairman said that so for as Linwood was concerned «he Four Rink Championship contest of last season had been, rather disappointing, and had excluded a number of good players. Mr F. Good said there should be a permanent title for the inter-club competition. It was" farcical to see the name of the Centre's competition changed each year, and he considered that no" matter what form it took the name should be the same throughout. Mr T. Hilson. moved that the club's delegate to the Centre be instructed to support a reversion to the pennant class of competition, one contest only to be held. Mr Dickson seconded the motion. He did not consider it right that the Centre should find games for sixteen members from each club.
Mr A. J. Benzie said ho took exception to remarks which had been made that the Centre provided for only sixteen players from each club. Each club could enter as many rinks as it liked. The position was that the competition was becoming too unwieldy, and the Centre could not find greens for the competitions to be played upon. Mr Dickson said he would not withdraw his remarks. Mr Bonzie and Mr Chegwin, of the Beckenham Club, had been the originators of the Four Rink Championship style of play. Mr E. Healey contended that the Centre had made the form of competition in accordance ' with tho wishes of the various clubs.
Mr Benzie, in explanation to Mr Dickson, said he had brought forward the Four Rink class of play last year, but several methods had been suggested. It might have been unfortunate for the speaker that his method had been adopted. (Laughter.) Mr H. Burson supported the motion, and said that teams, of three rinks should be entered in the competition. Mr Good moved, also, that there should be no restriction regarding the transfer of players from one rink to another in the above-mentioned contest. The motion was seconded by Mr Burson, and carried. Officers Elected. The following officers were . elected for the ensuing year:—President, Mr 0. E. Tustin; vice-president, Mr W. Sprosen; treasurer, Mr J. A. Clarke; secretary, Mr J. E. A notice of motion by Mr M. Kershaw that members of the Match tJommittee and selector or selectors could be nominated before the annual meeting, and elected at the annual meeting was lost. The chairman intimated that a lease of portion of the church property adjoining the club's greens had been secured for the use of the croquet section.
