At Hagley a flag maleh will be played by (ho Ladies' Cub to-morrow afternoon, for a prize presented by Airs C. Bonnington. Players will arrange with their opponents. The semi-final of the Bean cup (both divisions') must lie played on or before Friday, July 30th. The semi-finals of the. captain's trophy were played at Shirley on Saturday. "R. A. Wilson beat AW J.'. Anderson i! up and 2 to play, and IT. S. A\'j!liams, receiving five strokes, beat D. Reese -1 up and 3 to play. (Diving to next Saturday being occupied with the July medal.'the .final will not, be played then, but will be played on Saturday, July 11th. The Richmond Hill Club played a. medal handicap competition on Saturday, which was won by R. Hamilton with a net score of 71. The best scores

Pointhv Chrystall, of the Christchurch Ladies' Club, Jihs been playing excellent golf this season, and ia now one of the shortest; handicap ladv pin vers in the South Island, her handicap" now being three strokes. With Miss Chrvstall on this mark, or better by the du'lo of the ladies' championship nicotine, and with tho return of Miss OracroftAVilson, the Christchurch Ladies' Club should bo able to soud a very strong team to Miramar in October.

At Haglev on Saturday afternoon tho semi-linal of the Mearcs Cup was plaved end H. F. Pcnlington beat Or. k. 'Steivensou 4 up and 3 to play,' and H. E. Solomon beat M. A. 11. J* ell J up and 2. When it was learned that Walter was not defending his title, at Prekwick, in the Open Championship Meeting, it was hoped that some ot tho English stars would be able to win the event and thus' keep the title at Home, buf there is no doubt that America was well represented in at feast two contenders. Macdonukl Smith and Jim Barnes Barnes wen with the total of 300 for the lour rounds. A. Compston, North Manchester professional, ran liim a close second with a total of 301, while Macdonnld Smith, who had live strokes lead on bot!> Barnes and Compston at the end (.* tho third round, "took S3 for the final round and had a total of 30-1. James Barnes has been a contender for the British open title several times and has a world-wide fame as a-n instructor and writer on golf. Archie Compston, who occupies the same position this rear as K. R-. Whitcombo occupied lasii Veil- to Walter Hagcn. is in rank immediately next to t«:c leading star professional's in England. He stands <3ft 3m in height and weighs list. He lias enormous strength and an unmistakable aptitude for. tjie game. His determination to get on at golf is complete. He has been improving every year, atid is one of the few young players whose progress has been markedly steady.

Tho last round of the golf championship provided ■ odo of the greatest surprises, of tho championship. Macdonald-Smith., nt ; tho end of (ho third round, comfortably led (he field with 221, followed by Barnes and Compston 226, Ray and Mitchell 228, Ferme 229. Jim Barnes and Compston played together, and watched each other very cjosely. They played early. Barnes had; a fino ■ round of 74, malcinj an aggregato of 300. leaving MacdonaldSraith what seemed the . comparatively easy task of 78 to win. Compston had 75, making a total of 301. Macdonald-Smith :besan the last, round well, with four and- three.. Then .ho struck; trouble at the third; vvuich cost him six. He also took sixes at tho seventh'.and eighth, taking 42 out and leaving himself_ the difficult task of'doing, the last .nine, in 36, to which he proved unequal, probably through over-cautioD. iHe took 41, making 83 for iho round, his worst during the whole meeting. . Duncan, in the third round, had the worst falling-off during the whole championship. Ho played most indifferently,; and took six at tho third and seven at the next. He took 46 out, and then pulled himself together,' and came homo in 37. Charles Whileombe had the most unusual stroke'of bad luck. When he had taken up his stance at. the. twelfth hole a dog started out and bit him in tho hand. He plaved on a fow. holes, and .was then advised that it would be safer to retire and'obtain treatment. ' ■ "■'■'■» '" • ■ Kirkwood's game to-day improved. " He had two 70's, making an aggregate of 314. Ho -began the .third .round brilliantly, but slipped strokes on tho fifth', sixth, eighth, and ninth. Again jn the fourth round ho opened brilliantly and, came to grief against the wind on the seventh and eighth.- His scores out were 3, 3, 4, 5, 3, 4, 6, 6, 4, and home, 5,. 4.. 4. 6, 5, - 4, 4, .3, 3.
