ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Senior-Sergeant Mathicson, of Dunedin, arrived on Saturday night to take charge of the local Police Force, in place cf Senior-Sergeant P. Jackson, who retires on superannuation. General News. The retail prire of factory butter was increased to Is lOd per lb in Ashburton on Friday. The wholesale price is now Is Sd per lb. The Ashburton High School basketball and hockey teams returned on Saturday . night after having contested their annual matches with the Bangiora High School. Tho chief attraction at the Ashburton Quadrille Assembly's dance on Saturday evening was the waltzing competition, which was won by Miss P. McMillan and Mr S. Willis. A luckv spot waltz was won by Miss E. Laffey and Mr W. Lockhead. The music was supplied by Duybourne's Orchestra. The euchro tournament conducted fortnightly under the auspices of the Hakatere Lodge, in the Tancred street Hall, was on Saturday night won bv Mrs Tulloch and Mr A. Murdoch. There were about 80 couples present. The music for the dance which followed was supplied by Mrs M. Mitchell's orchestra. The "Weather.
The most severe frost experienced in Ashburton during the present winter was recorded on Saturday, when 14 degrees were registered. The morning was very cold, the sky having become heavily clouded at an early hour. A light rain that commenced at about 11 o'clock fell intermittently throughout the day, which proved very cold. Rain set in early yesterday and continued all day. The atmosphere was very cold.
Band. Concert. A very successful concert was conducted in tho Theatre Eoyal last evening by tho Ist Canterbury Mounted Eiilo Band. There was a large attendance, and each item was well received. The following programme was given under the baton of Lieutenant W. 11. Osborne:—March "Honest Toil"; hymn, "Bradford"; descriptive selection, "A Drumhead Service"; march, "The Four Horsemen of the' Apocalypse." Other contributions were given by Mr B. Frew, trombone solo, "Beneath Thy Window," with band accompaniment; Osborne Bros., triplotongue duet, "The Friendly Bivals"; and Mrs J. H. Millar, solo.
Old. Pupils' Dance. Another of a series of dances conducted under the auspices of the Ashburton High School Old Pupils' Association was held in the School Assembly Hall on Friday night, when there was an attendance of about 35 couples. Mrs A. Mitchell's Orchestra supplied the music. Among those present were:—Mr and Mrs W. F. Following are the results of the matches played in the primary schools' basketball competition on Saturday morning:—
A Grade.—Allcuton 8, Ashburton E. 7; Convent 20, Tinwald 2; Borough A bye.
B Grade. —Ashburton E 16, Allenton 1; Convent 24, Tinwald I; Broough a bye. Under the auspices of tho Ashburton Basketball Association the match between St. Andrew's and Technical School A on Saturday resulted in favour of the former by 17 points to 15. The match between Convent and Technical School B was postponed.
Rugby Football. The junior competition for primary school teams was continued on Saturday morning. Ashburton E defeated Borough by 9 points to nil. The Tin-walcl-Allenton match was won by Tinwald by C to nil. A senior grade game between Borough and Tinwald was played on Thursday, resulting in a win for Borough by 3 points to nil. Musical Club. There was a good attendance at a meeting of tho Ashburton Musical Club, held on Saturday night, when contributions were given from living composers, as follows: —Miss I. Digby, McDowell's "Old Love Story" (from "Fireside Tales"); Miss Fletcher, "Valse Suite" in C Minor (Coleridge-Taylor); Miss G. Galbraith, "Summer Evening" (John Ireland); Mrs A. T. Smith, song, "Over the Waters Blue" (Coning); Miss B. Claridge, '' Baehmaninoff 's Pie> hide."
Miniature Kifle Club. The match for the second trophy presented to the Askburton ■ Miniature Kifle Club by Mr J. Sinclair was concluded last week, when F. Clark proved the winner. The scores were as follows:—F. Clark 34 (1), 34, 34, 34; D. F. Keir 34 (1), 35, 34, 32; E. E. Truman 33 (2), 33, 34, 30; L. Hopkins 32 (3), 33/ 26; A. Shaw 31 (6), 31, 30; C. Welch 29 (10), 28. Shooting for the T. Bryant trophy resulted in favour of C. Simpson, who put up possibles in the last two shoots. Eesult3 were: C. Simpson 34 (2), 35, 35; G. Cromio 34 (1), 35, 34; N. White 35 f4), 34, 2S; C. Patching 29 (7), 31, 29; L. Hopkins 33 (3), 35, 31; F. Clark 34 (1), 34, 32. The hotty button for the week was won by D. F. Keir, with a possible. Mail Notices. Mails close to-day at Ashburton for northern ports at 5 p.m.; la.te fee letters, 5.25 p.m. guard's van, 5.43 p.m. METHVEN. On June 28th, 1900, the Loyal Methven Lodge, M.L"., 1.0.0. F. 7620, was formed and it thus celebrated its silver jubilee yesterday. The Lodge was inaugurated with a membership of eleven. The original office-holders were

Tliat tlie Lodgo was under good management is shown hy the fact that the membership lias now increased to 104, including a number of lady members, who have been fleeted during the past year. Going. RAKAIA. After some days of mild spring wear tlier thero was a hard frost on Friday night. On Saturday morning the weather was very bleak and cold, and the | sky was obscured by heavy elcuds all day; In the afternoon several showers of rain fell. Mr' J. D. O'Connor, postmaster at Rakaia, and Mrs O'Connor have returned from a holiday trip to the North Island.
Mr J. Ellis. Rakaia, manager for Messrs Russell and Co., has been selected as a member of the Rugby League team to tour Australia, and has left Rakaia to join the team. His place is being filled bv Mr Geering. A meeting of tho Rakaia Ploughing Match Association was held in the Road Board offico on Friday evening, Mr R. Oakley presiding over a good attendance of members. Tho action of the secretary in engaging McDonald's Orchestra for the dance which is to be held on tho evening of the ploughing match was approved. Tho fallowing Banco Committee was appointed:— Messrs W. W: Laraman, G. 'Patterson. B. McXamara, L. Cordner, E. Fox and A. Holmes. It was decided to charge gentlemen 2s 6d admission to the dance, ladies to provide baskets. Mr Oaklev reported that the 'tender of Messrs Mason, Struthers and Co. for the supply of cups had been accepted. It was decided to have a separate luncheon tent for the judges and competitors. Mr E. E. Oakley was appointed flagman. It was decided to hold a meeting to make final arrangements when the entries close.
