In aid of the appeal fund for tho memorial to tho nurses of the Overseas Nursing Services who died in the war, which is to take the form of a nurses' home in the Elizabeth Garrett Anderson Hospital, Viscountess Burnham, at "Wembley, opened a modern operating theatre which is being shown ir. tho Palace of Transport and Housing, Tho Duke of ConnaugluVis tho patron of the appeal fund, and its presidents are the Duke and Duchess of ; "fork. Princess Louise. Duchess of Argyll, is holding a reception at the Exhibition next Saturday in support of HHo■■appeal. Many friends of "the • hospital attended the opening of the Exhibit. ,:■ ■;;Ladv Burnham said that not only Xwas .she iiv great -sympathy with the V mbvemeht, hut, having travelled in i li'iany ; of the Dominions and Colonies she was full of. admiration tor \.ho splendid tiien and women who had been beared there. There tfere tin all ninety-seven nurses whose iianies would be inscribed on tho nicmoVidl ■ The hospital "was the first in the "British. Empire to be staffed by -ttbnieu, and „it was our first vqjuen's hospital. Before the war the • omen doctors of this country had •shown a fine professional spirit in proving that sucn a hospital could ho manned—she used the word advisedly . -_and : equipped in such a way as to ■■'■: merit general confidence and public approbation. . .During the war tho women of the Empire took their place with courago aiid determination in all the lines of Imperial organisation. They served at home'and abroad, in tho war zones and hehind them, with all the forces of the Crown. During the war the women i trained in the Elizabeth Garrett Ander- \ son Hospital did magnificent and essential work; and it was surely appropriate that the .memorial the Overseas ■NursinC Services should form part of the extension for winch the hospital :■.. made its .appeal. Fifteen thousand k pounds- was required for building the Nurses' home, and she felt sure that everyone, who was indebted, to the aid ' -and devotion of the medical and nurs- : ing Services dialing tibe war wauid •■'•"■'gw»D the opportunity of giving some suni, however small, to honour and perpetuate tho memory of those 'brave women who came to us from overseas ;: ih our hour of need, and who did their • duty so nobly.
