LOCAL BODIES' CO-OPERATION.

A PRACTICAL SUGGESTION. DRAINAGE BOARD AND ROAD IMPROVEMENT. A desire to give practical effect to co-operation amongst local bodies was expressed at yesterday afternoon's special meeting of the Drainage Board in connexion with the road improvement schemo of the Eiecarton Borough Council, iu conjunction with the Tramway Board. Mr E. H. S. Hamilton said that he noted that the Eiecarton Borough Coun-" cil, in conjunction with the Tramway Board, intended laying down Eiecarton road, from Deans's avenue to Clyde road, in permanent material, and it seemed to him that it would be a foolish thing for tho Drainage Board's contractors to come along after this had been done and rip up this part of the road. He suggested that steps should be taken by tho Board to call for tenders at an early dato for tho laying of the sewer from Deans's avenue to Clyde road, so that before next winter the Borough Council and the Tramway Board could proceed with tho formation of Eiecarton Toad after tho sewer had been laid. At the samo time he would like to seo provision made in the Beard's contract, owing to the exceptional circumstances of tho case, for the connexions for reticulation being laid down at eacli street corner, and carried tho full width of tho street, and that, wherover possible, house connexions should be carried to the boundary of tho sections. "Whon a local body decided to put down a first-class bitumen surface, he thought that the Board shouid endeavour to put its work in hand 'iu such a manner that would intorfero as little as possible with tho other local body's work. Eo knew that, there was a difficulty in respect of putting in drainage connexion to houses, but he thought that if the householders on the portion of Eiecarton road referred to knew that the Board intended letting a contract they would, in tho special circumstances, be prepared to pay their proportion of the cost of putting the connexions to their properties. The chairman (Mr W. J. Walter) suggested that tie matter should lie referred to the Works Committee to decide. Mr Hamilton moved, and Mr W. E. Carey soconded, that tho matter should bo referred to tho Works Committee, with power to act. Mr D. Eowse raised tho point that the committee had decided that the next contract to be let should be the Woolston ono. Tho ..chairman said that the Woolston contract was not a very big one, and if the matter raised by Mr Hamilton were referred to the committee, it could see what could bo done. The motion was agreed to.
