OVERCROWDED SCHOOLS.

■■ 9 POSITION COMMENTED UPON. The question of overcrowded schools in Christcliurch lms been commented upon by Mr E. H. Andrews, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, and an ex-chairman of that body. Mr Andrews stated that in his opinion the cause of overcrowding was that school buildings were not erected in the various localities until the need for them was very great, and the Department had rarely built for the future. Besides this, when new schools wtya built parents preferred to send their children to them instead of to the older buildings where conditions were not so favourable. With regard to future requirements, said Mr Andrews, the Minister of Education had urged tho Board to purchase sites in advance, but lack ol' funds had forced the Board to drop this policy.
