SUMNER ITEMS.

Methodist Church, Bedcliffs. There has been a movement on foot for some time to build a Methodist Church in Rcdeliffs. The prime movers have been endeavouring to raise the necessary money, and to that end. a concert will he given in the Rcdeliffs Community Hall next week by Mr S. Clothier and party, many of whom were j winners in the recent competitions. Plunket Society. The president and the committee of the Sumner branch of the Phmket Society have issued invitations for an "at home" in the Parish Room next Thursday afternoon. Mrs Mouldey (lion, secretary) and the ladies of the committee are working hard to ensure the success of the function, and it is anticipated that there will be a large attendance of those interested in the work of. the society. Trost Fish. During the week a local resident picked up a large frost fish on the beach, the first for several years. The fish, when caught, was still alive, but offered very little resistance, as its efforts to reach -the sea had exhausted it. 'The lucky finder readily found a sale for this rare delicacy. •

Ladies' Rifle Club. The shooting at the Sumner Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club showed a marked improvement this week, when there was a full attendance of members. Mr F. J. Glackin and' Miss Merry tied for the button, each registering a point for the aggregate, and Miss Merry, finally holding the button for the. week. ~ District High School The Social Committee of the District High School met this weckj when it was decided to consider, for this year, on account of the crowded attendances •last year, two evenings for the annual school social and fancy .dress dance. The dates under consideration were Friday, July 31st, for the junior classes up to Standard 111., and the following Wednesday, August sth, for the secondary and senior scholars. It was agreed to hold the'committee's social for'the staff and their friends oii Monday, July 13th, provided suitable arrangements could be made. Good: progress, with Mr ,G. A. Bundle's Dramatic and Revue Company was reported, further assistance by men members being anticipated. Cricket Club. The progress made by the Sumner. Cricket Club was well demonstrated by ! the attendance at its annual smoke concert on Thursday evening.. The president, Mr,F. A. Tapson, was 'in"the chair. The short toast list which was honoured included "The King," proposed by the chairman; "Kindred Sports," proposed by Mr G. F. Allen and responded to by Mr W. G. Black, president of the Bowling Club; "The Borough Council," proposed by Mr A. M. Don, who congratulated the borough upon the improvement made in the j playing area at what was once St.; Leonard's Square. Ho urged-the sports | clubs to make a united effort to do credit to the improvement by building a suitablo pavilion, and suggested that the name be altered to Nicholson Park in. honour of the.-work, done by -the present Mayor. Councillor - Agcr. responded, and said that tho responsibility resting on the shoulders of the councillors in their efforts to be just to every section, of thd borough was a heavy one. They looked'for assistance, from the ratepayers. The toast of " The •Winning Team" was proposed by.Mr Buchanan and responded to by the captain of the."B"'ieani,.Mr W..Hamp-. r ton, junior. The presentation of the bat presented by the Mayor to ihe most improved player and. most interested member, was undertaken, at the special request of the chairman, by the veteran player, Mr \V;. J. Presbyterian Church. The animal meeting of the P.W.M.U. was held on Thursday afternoon, the itev. W. McAra prcsiuing over a good attendance. The annual report showed that good work had been aone during the year.
