TMARU. Social and Personal. Mrs Arthur Wigley (Park Lane) has returned from Christchurch. Mr and Mrs Donald Grant (Fairlie) left for Sydney on Thursday. Mrs John Guthrie fSefton street} returned from Christchurch yesterday. Miss Ella Tripp (Orari Gorge) has gone North on a visit to her sister, Mrs Stopford (Napier). Mrs W. F. Hamilton, who has been spending a few days in Christchurch, returned to Fairlie on Thursday. Mr and Mrs.C. Cresswell (Lismpre) will spend the week-end with Mrs John Matheson (Wai-iti road). Mrs J. \V. Harris (Lyttelton) is the guest of Mrs E. K. Isaac (Wai-iti road). Mr Taylor and the Misses Thurston (Australia) motored back from tho Hermitage yesterday. Mrs James Grant (Grey's Hills) came back yesterday from Christchurch, and is spending the week-end with Mrs A. Grant. Mr and Mrs "Waters, who were at Orari Gorge with Miss Tripp, have gone to Christchurch en route for England. Mr Norman Hope (Stanton), who was with Mr and Mrs A. Hope (Gleniti), is now the guest of Mr and Mrs Barker (Woodbury). The Weather. A southerly wind on Thursday night with overcast skies appeared to foreshadow a change in the weather, but by yesterday morning the sky was again clear, and the day was bright and sunny. An Old Man in Trouble. Charles McDonald, alias Tomlin, alias Holmes, alias John McDonald, aged 62, was charged before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday with obtaining by fraud from Charles Begg and Co. a violin and £3 17s 6d in money by means of a valueless cheque for £lO, drawn on the National Bank of New Zealand, Christ-chur-ch, and also with obtaining from A. C. Tollcy, Dunedin, a. suit of clothes and £3 14s in money by the same means. Accused pleaded guilty, and was committed to tho Supreme Court at Dunedin for sentence on the first change, and was remanded to .appear at.Dunedin on July Ist on tho second charge. GERALDINE. The Oddfellows' annual ball took place in the Drill Hall on Thursday night, and was a very great success. There was a large attendance of local brethren and ladies, while in addition some thirty members of tho order came from Temuka. The large hall was admirably decorated and illuminated by ■ electric light. With the floor in perfect order, and the music, which was. supplied by Miss Morgan's orchestra, all that could be desired, it is no wonder the dancers enjoyed themselves. Mr R; Wood was M.C. Many of the dresses were much admired. Dancing was continued till about 2.30. After supper Brother E. Patrick, on behalf of tho members 1 of the local Lodge, expressed pleasure at having present so many members of other lodges.
