WHAT IS A SPRUIKER?
In the claims of tho Wellington Theatrical Employees' Union before the Arbitration Court at Wellington this week, appeared "spruikers, £4 lGs 6d per week." Mr W. Scott (employers' reprseentative on tho Court): What is a spruikeri Mr W. A. Grenfell (appearing for the employers): Ho is generally termed a "barker." He it) a man employed to draw attention to the ticket box. Mr A. W. Ci-osktry (for tne Union) : .Not necessarily the ticket box, but the whole B Mr Justice Krazer: I always understood that a spruikor was a man who stood outside the tent of the fat lady at a show and endeavoured to Attract patrons. Do they employ them in front of theatres' Mr Croskory: Whenever a special attraction comes alo'ng this typo of person is generally employed to announce its virtues in Iront 01 the house. The Court, agreed to accept the term.
