BOWLING.

CANTERBURY CLUB. The annual report of the Canterbury Bow! ing Club states that the past year has been a very successful one. Th,e champion rink, skipped by Mr J. A. Redpath, is to be congratulated on winning tho champion of champions competition this year, ns aro also Messrs Anderton, Harkess, Grange, and W. E. Maynard, who wero the runners-up at the Easter tournament. Tho season closed with a roll of 87 playing and eleven honorary members, and as there is ample room for additions to these numbers, mombers aro asked to induce a friend to join. Previous to the opening day the Easter green was open for play to all bowlers at a charge of one shilling each per afternoon, and the sum of £l4 Ss was- collected. If weather permits it is intended to use it again as a winter green. The western green has been much appreciated, and-we are now gn equal terms with other clubs as regards length of heads. The green ( superintendent hopes next season to have it in a condition equal to any in tho district. The House Committee is to be congratulated on tho success attending the card tournaments, etc., as these have netted the sum of £35 7s lid. Warmest thaiiks are due to them for the time and energy they have devoted to the work, also to those gentlemen who presented prizes or gave donations. Tho balance-sheet shows a credit of £53 17s 3d.

NEW CLUB FORMED IN SPREYDON.

_A new bowling club in Spreydon, to be known as the Barrington Club, was formed, at a meeting held in tho old Spreydon Borough Council Chambora last night. The green, .which is in course of vjreparation, is situated in Spreydon Park, Barrington street. Mr G. Wear, convener of the meeting, who has acted as organising secretary for tho new club, occupied the chair, and there was a good attendance of residents. Mr Wear, in outlining what had already been done, said that tho green had been laid out and the ground was prepared for planting. . A wooden edga had ' been .Jut in • and trees for a shelter belt planted. It would bo necessary to erect fenceß and to pay for. the work of providing wooden edges. ,Mr T. W. Lower had generously offered to lend a sum of £IOO with which to pay for the preliminary work. > It was necessary, if that offer was to m availed of, to form the club into an incorporated society, Mr. W. H. Winsor asked what were, the „,. —, u ]a t ';'n e clnb would have to face immediately. One item of expenditure would Mr Lewor said that a. board, fence should bo erected. Mr Wear as Boon as the bowling c'.ub was properly formed it was- his intention to call, a meeting of ladies with tho object of forming a croq-uet club. Mr J. T.. Poison suggested that a compiuueiioive club, embracing bowling, croquet and tennis, should be formed at once, with one. pavilion for the whole club. Mr Winsor said - that about eight chains of fencing, costing about £BO, would be required at present. Other expenses were material and plant, greenkeeper, water supply, and pavilion. He understood" that between seventy and eighty members were in view. They should-make a start along the right lines. It was decided to form the club. Mr Lower said ho had. made his offer because ho wished ,to see a bowling club inaugurated for tho • sake of the district. He did not think ho would bo able to play" bowls anuch more.

The following officers were elected: — Patron, Mr T. W. Lewer; president, Mr H. C. Lane; vice-president, Mr T. Greig; honorary secretary, Mr G. Wear; honorarv treasurer, Rev. J. W. Hay ward; committee, Messrs H. Hinkey, J. Cooper. C. Fish, G. Herd, and Bev. J. W. Hayward. It was decided to call a general meeting o£ members at an parly date.
