SUPREME COURT. (SPECIAL 70 "THE PBBSi.") GREYMOUTH. June 24. At to-day's sitting of the Supreme Court evidence was heard for the defence in the case of Ryan v. Chamberbin, a claim for £390 for loss of stock, trespass and damages. Mr IV. P. McCarthy appeared for plaintiff and Mr "VY. J. Joyce, for the defendant. Judgment -was given for £2lO for loss of stock, being the price of 27 head of cattle at £8 per head, and £2 for trespass, with costs on the middle scale. In Bankrutpcy. James William Murphy, labourer, of Waiuta, has filed his schedule in bankruptcy. Hotel Changes Hands. Mr C. C. Preston has sold the lease of the Kumara. Junction Hotel to Mr Arthur Hill, late of the Lakeside Hotel, Moana.

Mining Matters. The Papr.roa and Stockton mines are not working. The State Mine is also idle. Lack of orders is given as the reason for tho slackness in the industry. Infantile Paralysis. The infant admitted to the Grey River Hospital last week suffering from infantile paralysis is making good progress. Personal. Dr. J. F. C. Moore, medical superintendent of the Grey River Hospital, is recovering from his recent indisposition.

Mr It. L. MeNabb, of the Recfton High School staff, will leave on Monday for Forest Hill, near Invcrenrgill, where ho has received an appointment tis head teacher. He was honoured last evening by the pupils and presented with a leather suit-case. Mr McNubb was the recipient of a similar prescii' tation from the Shop Assistants' Foot' ball Club.-

Mr B. R. Sword, Assistant Divisional Superintendent, New Zealand Railways, Mr H. Chapman, District Traffic Manager at Christchurch, and Mr A. Wellstead, Commercial Agent, aro visiting Greymouth on Departmental business.

The death is announced of Mr Neil Leslie Nicholson, of Marsden, after u brief illness.

There was a large attendance at tho funeral of tho late Mr Michael John Thornton, which was held this afternoon at Karoro Cemetery. Members of the Returned Soldiers' Association inarched in the cortege, and a detachment acted as pall-bearers. The Rev. Father Houlahan, assisted by the Rev. Father Fogarty, celebrated Requiem Mass at St. Patrick's Church, and conducted the service at the graveside. Mr J. Tindall, of Christchurch, will act as judge at the Westport Poultry Club's show.

Mr Charles Peter Glass, South Westland, died last evening at the Westland Hospital. The deceased was a native of Kokatahi, and was 51 years of age. Ho leaves a widow and family of five sons and two daughters. Motor-Cycle Club. With a view to attracting entries for its next sports from all over the Dominion, the Greymouth Motor-Cycle Club is endeavouring to raise a large sum and increase the prizes offered. One of the projects favoured with this end in view is an art union. Automobile Association. A party of members of the Canterbury Automobile Association will arrive on the Coast on Tuesday, and will visit Hokitika, Greymouth, Reefton, and Westport, returning to Christchurch on July 4th. ■ Bcotia Syndicate. A meeting of shareholders in the Scotia mining syndicate has been called with a view to winding up its affairs, if such a course is deemed advisable. Buller Progress League. At the monthly meeting of the Buller Progress League, petition lists with over 1000 signatures requesting the Government to push on with the Buller Gorge railway, were laid on the table. It was resolved to ask the Tourist Department to station an officer at Westport. Messrs C. S. Beilby, and Harkness were appointed to represent the League on the deputation to the Government with, regard to the coastal road and other district matters. Hockey.

At, a meeting of the Buller Hockey Association, it was resolved to nominate Mr C. Sara as referee for the test match at "Wellington on August Bth, and to request Mr H. Throp to referee the match between Australia, and Buller, at Westport.
