BOROUGH COUNCILS.

KAIAPOI. The fortnightly meeting of the ICaiapoi Borough Council was held last night. Present —The Mayor (Mr H. Mcintosh), and Crs. F. Tliorne. J. Thirst. W. H. Stark, A. Moore, A. Johnson, W. G. Winter, G. E. Gillett, K. J. Dunn-, and J. W. Barnard. A letter was received from the AuditorGeneral forwarding the annual balance-sheet duly audited.

Mr L. C. B. Fuldseth wrote advising that he had sold his section. No. 33 Kairaki, to Mr G. W. Jlaze.v. G'hristchurch. The Kangiora County Council advised having inspected the Beach road, and said arrangements had been made with Mr C> Driscoll to put it in order *s soon as possible. The chairman of the Canterbury Committee of the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition wrote asking for a contribution on a basis of Is for every £IOOO capital value, the Kaiapoi quota being £9 J Is. towards Canterbury- province being represented at tAe Exhibition. It was decided to receive a deputation from the committee at the next meeting. On the recommendation of the Lighting Committee it was decided that a street lamp should be erected in the right-of-way between High and Hilton streets. The estimated receipts and expenditure for the year ending March 31st, 1926, were submitted, showing expenditure £4411 4s, receipts, other than rates, £2229 lis 7d. The statement was adopted. Notice of motion was given that a general rate of 2s 4d in the £1 be levied on the rateable property in the borough. On the recommendation of the Health Inspector, it was decided to lay an 18-inch pipe drain in Beswi«k street from Sewell street to Charles street, at an approximate cost of £6l 10s. The Finance Committee wa* asked/'to report as to the advisability of raising a further loan for building houses in the borough under the municipal housing scheme. It was decided to purchase eniough pinus insignis trees to plant a further five acres on the Council's North road reserve. The financial statement showed: —Receipts since last meeting £213 14s lid; credit bank balance £7B 2s 4d.
