THE NEW BISHOP.

TO THE XDITOJt O T '"tllE PEE9S." Sir,—Pleased that "Anglican" is quite in accord with most of what I have said, which helps to narrow the issue slightly. A few years ago Bishop Barnes gave expression to views about the origin of man, which are not consistent with the plain statements in the Book of Genesis, and any clergyman who does this is a dangerous teaclier in any church. . As "Anglican" must know very well, a man is not appointed to an episcopal position because he is sound in the faith or Lecauso ho has distinguished himself as having left a trail of good behind him. His appointment is a political one, and for aught the head of tho Government for the time being knows he may ..be a man holding and giving vent to, views jvhich may quietly but effectively work ruin in the minds of thousands of his countrymen. And it seems remarkable to mo that when such a man—as in tho case of Bishop Barnes—has had bis dangerous doctrines cabled to New Zealand, some one hero (usually in the City of tho Plains) rushes to the newspapers in tremendous lias to to spread the "good news." A recent writer has said that when Christ comes to the world Ho will iind it "hot rebellion." I quita believe this; the world is in hot rebellion against Him now, and things seem to be heading up to the great crisis. ~\Vo are told distinctly that when the Son of Man comes, Ho will not find the faith on tho earth, and all this attack on tho faith from all quarters (mostly from, inside.all denominations) is a suro sign that we are living in the latter days. I earnestly hope the Christchurch Synod may be happy in its choice of a Bishop, whose influence will ba for the highest g-ood. —Yours, etc., WATCHMAN.
