SOUTH ISLAND MAIN TRUNK.
6" PROGRESS LEAGUE ACTION. A letter from the organiser, Canterbury Progress League, was received at the meeting of the City Council last night in reference to the completion of the New Zealand Main Trunk Railway. The writer forwarded a copy of the resolution passed by the League.in reference to the uncompleted portion of the railway lying between Parnassus and Wharanui, as follows: —"That in the opinion of this League the completion of the New Zealand Main Trunk Kail-. way by filling the gap between Wharanui and Parnassus is urgently necessary in the interests of the railway service as a whole, and essential to the proper development and progress .of the Dominion. That the Prime Minister be urged to give the earliest possible consideration to the recommendations contained in the report, particularly in the matter of. completing surveys of the section referred to." Cr. D. G. Sullivan complimented the League on their report regarding the trunk line. The Council, he said, would be justified in supporting the League in its endeavours to; have the line completed, lie moved to that effect. The motion was seconded,by Cr. A. McKellar, who suggested that it:would be better to defer, the matter till the: next meeting to, give. Councillors, an opportunity to digest tho report. " The suggestion 'tvas approved of, and the matter held over.
