SOUTH CANTERBURY.
TIMARU. Social and Personal. Mrs J. Guthrie (Sefton street) returned i'rom Christehurch yesterday. Mrs English ("Grasmcre") returned on Baturday from a holiday in llawkc's Bay and Auckland. Mrs Malfroy (Sefton street) and Mrs W. D. licvcll (Jackson street) came back on Saturday from a short visit to Christehurch. Mr and Mrs James Times (Haldon Station) left- on Saturday for Auckland, where they -will join the Aoraugi for Sydney. Mr "and' Mrs D. C. Turnhull (Evans street) left yesterday for the north en route to England. During their absence their house will be occupied by Mr and Mrs Tom Wigley (Hakataramea). The Weather. The weather conditions over -the week-end were anything but bright, Sunday being cold with an overcast sky. After two degrees of frost yesterday morning a fog enveloped Tiniaru but towards midday the sun came out and the sky cleared. TEMUKA. The Native Land Court, presided over iby Judge Gilfedder, held its halfyearly sitting in tho Courthouse, Temuka,»last week, and dealt with numerous applications for succession ifa deceased persons' estates, partitions of land and other matters. "When the Court opened, Himiona Tbrepc and other leading chiefs present made feeling reference to tho death of the Prime Minister, the late Right Hon. AV. F. Mas.sey. Judge Gilfedder replied in suitable terms, and adjourned' the Court out of respect to the memory of Mr Maswy. The Judge, as President of tho Maori Land Board, held a meeting of the Board on Thursday, at which several applications for the confirmation of sales and leases were disposed of. A matter of. local interest dealt with was in connexion with the Timaru Native- Heserve. Messrs' Long and Washer representing a syndicate, attended the meeting and discussed with tho presi-j dent and tho Native owners present, the best means of arriving at an amicable agreement as to the sale of the reserve. After some discussion it was agreed that each side should appoint, a valuer to make a valuation of' the land, and in the event of the valuators disagreeing, the matter.- to be decided by an arbitrator valuer, whose valuation vjjulcl bo final, and ' treated as the price at which the land is to bo sold. Judge Gilfedder left on Saturday far Duiiedin. |
