ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. Messrs G. Raymond, C. X. Ilaslam. andT. T. Evans, Canterbury Education Board inspectors, are at present on a general tour of inspection of the various county schools. Prior to his departure to take over the position of Clerk of the Magistrate's Court at To Puke, Mr J. T. Fallwcll. was met by members of the legal profession and presented with a pipe as a token of esteem. In making the presentation Mr 11. C. Orbell referred in eulogistic terms to the work Mr Fallwell had done during his torm in Ashburton. Mr E. Kennedy congratulated Mr Fallwell upon his appointment, stating that ho hoped it would be the forerunner of further promotion. Messrs A. K. JSorth and V. W. Russell also wished him success in his new sphere. Mr Fallwcll suitably returned thanks, stating that ho had enjoyed his term in" Ashburton, and he had. always met with courtesy from members of the legal profession. General News. A raiding party from the Ashburton Savage- Club, led by Great Chief F. Curtis, descended upon tho Geraldino Hapu on- Saturday evening and entertained the neighbouring club. Geraldine received the raiders in their usual hospitable manner. Seven degrees of frost were registered in Ashburton yesterday morning. In honour of the anniversary of the coronation of King George V., bunting was flown from the Government Buildings in Ashburton yesterday. In'recognition of the birthday of the Prince of Wales, flags will be flown to-day. At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, a first offender for drunkenness was fined 5s by Mr E. Clark, J.P. A concert was given in tho hospital grounds on Sunday afternoon by the First Canterbury Mounted Eifles Band. The takings "at tho doors of tho Winter Show amounted to £lll 15s 3d more than last year, and it is understood that the total receipts will be greater than those of last year owing to tho guessing competition bringing , in. about £.30. The homo and home match which was fired last week between the Ashburton and the Otago Miniature Bine Associations resulted in a win for the former by 31 points. The conditions were" 25 men a-sidc, the twenty highest scores to count.- Tho local Association put on 961 points out of a possible of 1000, while their opponents' scores totalled 931. Mail Notices. Mails close at Ashburton to-day for northern ports at a p.m.; laie fee Jotters 5.25 p.m.; guard's van 5.43 p.m. STAVELEY. The Loyal Pioneer Lodge, M.U., L0.0.F., met on Saturday evening, N.G., Bro. A. E. Green . presiding. Three brethren were reported to he on the sick funds of the lodge, and sick pay and accounts, totalling. £24 17s 6d were passed for payment. Four, candidates were proposed and accepted for membership. The. winter has put almost all the local roads into very bad condition, but the contractor for the local stretch of the main highways is -repairing broken surfaces. Shingle fortius purposo is, however, difficult to obtain, as most of the gravel. pit 3 are, full of water, and riverbed shingle is either scarce or difficult of access. Timber for redecking the traffic bridges in the: vicinity has arrived. The matter of a new manager for the vStaveley Co-operative Dairy Company is at present occupying the attention of the directorate, which met last week. A new lorry for collecting cream from the surrounding districts is to be pur- ' chased. The factory has closed down for tho season, and next season the butter-plant is to be started before tho cheese-making commences. A fine response was made to the canvass for new cream suppliers. The little butter which was made at the close of the season put the Staveley creamery butter well and most favourably on the market. METHVEN. Since the announcement of reduced freight rates on the railway, the local staff have been busy canvassing business people and farmers with a, view to increasing traffic on the Methven branch. The lorry proprietors are also pushing business, and have'announced their intention to meet tlio new rates by reducing their charges, and are now carting at the cheaper rates. Tho public are benefiting by the freight war, and are thankful accordingly. The Ladies' Hockey Club's junior team played the. Ashburton High School team at Methven, and defeated the visitors by 6 goals to nil. E. Dalton, of the Methven team, played well, being responsible for four /but of the six goals scored. ALFORD FOREST. The ladies of the district held their second annual ball in the scnoolrctom.. The night was fine for the occasion, and many visitors from surrounding districts were in attendance. The school was tastefully decorated with evergreens and streamers. The music for dancing was provided by Chapman's Orchestra, extras being played by Messrs Wolfreys, Alexandra, Smith, Carney, Fagan. Songs were given by Messrs H. Smith. Mr It. Grieve, of Springburn, was M.C. RAKAIA. A friendly hockey match was played I on the Domain on Friday afternoon be- | twecn teams from the Rakaia Public • School and the Convent School. The game resulted in a win for the Pub-' lie School by one goal to nil. Miss-. 11. Shannon was referee. BARRHILL. The fortnightly euchre tournament ' was held in tho school on Saturday ' evening, when thero was a good attendance. Tho prizes were won by : Miss Gemmell and Mr R. Blain. The consolation prizes went to Mrs X. Clinton and Mr W. Penney.
