FIRE-ENGINE SMASH.
CITY COUNCIL SYMPATHY. "When the City Council assembled lait night the Mayor (Mr J. K. Archer) said that Councillors wero pware of the unfortunate motor accident which took placo on tho night of Juno loth when Station Officer Noblett lost his life and six other firemen were injured. Letters of sympathy had been sent to the relatives of the deceased and to the firemen who were injured. A wreath was sent on behalf of tho Mayor, Councillors and pitizens of Christ-church, and the Town Clerk and himself had attended the funeral of Station Officer Noblett. C'r.. F. K. Cooke said the accident was a deplorable one. He moved: "That when n fire engine is on its way to a call motorists bo asked to draw in to the side of the road and pedestrians be asked not to attempt to cross the road, so as to allow tho brigade a free run." This was seconded by Cr. C. Carr, who said that fire engines should not bo permitted to pass through the bottle neck at tho Bank corner when they ccidd reach a fire by another route. Cr. C. P. Agar raised a point of order regarding the advisability of tho motion at that stage, but was overruled. ■C'r. Agar still contended that the motion was out of order anil could only be considered under new business. The Mayor said tho motion ■.•ould be taken by permission of the Council. Permission was refused on the voices.
