■ ♦ Personal. A number of shipping friends mot in the oftict' of Messrs ICiuscy and Co., Ltd., 011 Saturday, lo farewell Mr E. Gill, a member of the staff, who is retiring, niter twentyfive years' service with the company, 011 account of ill-health. Mr I'. E. Sutton. who presided, spoke of tin? excellent terms on which Mr Gill had always worked with his associates, and asked his acceptance of a wallet of notes. Mr I>. Jack, representing the Lyttclton tally clerks, also made euloprisiic reference lo Mr Gill. Mr Gill replied briefly, thanking those present for the kind remarks and then- thoughtful gift. Harbour Light Theatre. There was a packed house at the Harbour Light Theatre on Saturday evening when "The Spoilers" from the novel by Rex Beach, was screened, together with a comedy, gazette, and- scenic. An addod attraction was the appearance of Scott and McGili. baritone . and tenor respectively, who liaye recently been earning for themselves ':msiderable commendation ir-. Ohristchurch vaudeville. They were heard in duets and solus, and the-large audience was manifestly delighted with their singing. The picture portion of the programme will be repeated to-night. To-morrow, "On the Banks of tho Wabash," a story with u sensational climax, the scene of which is laid 011 one of the navigable rivers of the southern States of America, will be shown. The supporting programmo includes a Lightning comedy, gazette, and a further episode of 'Tight and Win."
Obituary. Ti-e death occurred at the lianncrdale Hospital, Ohristchurch, on Saturday morning, of Private Royal .Staffold Stewart, third son of Mr D. Stewart, of Dublin street, from injuries received seven verrs ago in the Great War. Tlie la.to Private Stewart was thirty-one years old, and previous to enlisting was employed as a compositor on the Lytteltori Times Co.'s..staff. He enlisted in tho 26th Beinforcomont as a member of the TMflc .Brigade, but later, at Sling Camp, transferred to the 12th Nelson Infantry. In the retreat at Bapaume on August 24th, 1018, ho was severely wounded in the spine and was invalided to Walton-on-Thaiaes. He was invalided back to .New Zealand in the early part of 1919, and was for a long time in the Chalmers Ward nt tho Christchurch Hospital, until, with the closing of tho ward as a military hospital, ho was transferred to ths Kannordale Home, where he remained until the time of his death, The late Private Stewart was very popular with thoso who knew him. He was a member of St. John's Presbyterian Church, and for a time was secretary of St. John's Hockoy Club. A brother, Doric, was killed in action in France in December, 1917. A military funeral, at -which returned soldier comrades will be present, will be accorded the lato Private Stewart this afternoon, leaving thi residence at 2.30 p.m. Euchre and Dance. There was a good attendance at the euchre party and danco held in tho Forosters' Hall cn Haturdr.y evening.. The winners of the euchre tournament were as follows: Ladies, Miss E. Porteous 1, Mrs M. Bradbury 2, Miss' B. Smith consolation; gentlemen, Sir R. Madden 1, Mr W. J. Grave 2, Ms L. Jtevell consolation. After (he tournament, supper wis provided and the remainder of the evening was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mr A. Arneaoa., Mr L. Thomas was M.C. 1
Playing in the first'round of the men's championship'of the Diamord Harbour Club on Saturday afternoon, H. Ayers defeated C. Mazey, and R. Candy boat It. Rhind. A handicap match for o- trophy presented by Mr A. D. Hamilton was won by P. Barnard, W. Payne being runner-up. A medal match was played by the Lyttelton Ladles' Club during the week-end. Hiss E. Bundy and Hiss W. White-Parsons tied for first place. A men's medal match played at Chartoris Bay during the week-end resulted in a win for H. Derbidge, T. Wales being the runncrup.
