ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. ilr I. T. Falhvell. who lias been on the staff of tlie Ashburton Magistrate's Court for a number of years and who leaves to-day to take over the clerkship :>t: the To Puke Magistrate's Court in the Bay of Plenty, was on Saturday night entertained at a smoke concert by n largo circle of friends and presented with ;i travelling rug as a token of 1 esteem. Mr W. Smith presided over tho gathering. After the toast of "The finest" had been honoured the chairman made the presentation ou behalf of those present, and in doing so referred to the integrity of Mr Fallwell, and to the interest that he had taken in, t' lo sporting side of the town, especially liugby football, of which he was l'or some time a member ox the governing body. In conclusion, ho wished their guest success in the position he was about to take over. The recipient suitably returned thanks, stating that while he was sorry to leave the district, the present would always be a memento of the good times lie had spent, in Ashburton. During the evening a comprehensive toast list was honoured. The chairman then introduced Mr Falhvell's successor, Mr Thompson, and Mr C. 0. Pratt, who has recently taken over the position of clerk of tho Ashburton Magistrate's Court. Items were given by the following:— Messrs K. Maybury, S. Tunliffe, C: J. Brannigau, W. Thompson, .W. Ruffell, ,T. Mulvey, and G. Wilkie. The accompaniments were played by Mr H. Taskcr. General Items. A dance under the auspices of the Ilakntere Lodge was held in the Lodge Hall, Tancrcd street, on Saturday night. The music was supplied by Mrs Mitchell's Orchestra. The lucky spot waltz was won by Miss M. Hocking and Mr AV. Anderson, and the Monte Carlo waltz by Miss G. Miller and Mr T. Miller. * The Loyal Ashburton Lodge, M.U., L0.0.1\, held a very successful social in the Orange Hall on Saturday night. Early in the evening a euchre tournament was played, the winners being Mrs A. Gates and Mr G. Solway. Dane ing was afterwards indulged in, Daybourn's Orchestra supplying the dance nmsic.

F. David, who was admitted to tho Hospital 011 Saturday suffering from concussion and a slight fracture of the skull, received in the Old Boys v. Ashburton football match, was reported last evening to be progressing satisfactorily.

About twenty returned soldiers competed in a flying fifty billiards handicap at the Returned Soldiers "Club. The final was piayed between J. Dobbin and F. Hume, tho latter winning. Tho prize was presented by Mr T. J. Hunter. Miniature Eiflc Shooting. A home and home match between the Ashburton and Otago Miniature Kifle Associations was fired last week, the Ashburton representatives averaging a score of slightly over>4S per man. The conditions were "5 men a side, the 20 highest scores to count. Ashburton'3 total score was 061, the possiblo being 1000. Details of the local scores are: A. Pratley (Willowby), P. The annual meeting of the Ashburton County School Committees' Association was held on Friday night when the president (Mr J. Watson) presided. . The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, 'Mr ,T.' ' Wats'oii; vice-president, Mr R. Houston; secretary and treasurer, Mr I{. H. Loy; committee, Messrs W. 11. Woods, G. W. Andrews, H. Money, AV. Donald, P. E. Amos, I'\ G. Evans, C. Armstrong, J. Lowery, S. P. Taylor, and W. A. Lill. It was decided to write to" the Education Board pointing out the unfairness of making no travelling grant to children who used a vehicle only - one way to or from school. It was resolved to urge that legislation be introduced to allow the Ashburton County direct representation oil the Canterbury Education Board. Basketball. The primary schools' basketball competitions were continued on Saturday morning, with the following results;— A Grade. —Borough 11, Convent 5; Tinwald 12, East Ashburton 5. RAKAIA. At a. general meeting of the Te Miharo Hockey Club, the secretary, Mrs Pluck, reported that arrangements were well in hand for the Green and Gold Ball to augment the club's funds.
