AMATEUR TOURNAMENT
In many quarters it is considered that (oo much attention is paid to professional fighting and not enough ' encouragement given to amateurs, but this is not a charge that can be laid against tho. Christchurch Sports Club, which, though providing for professionals, has never lost Bight of tho amateur boxer. Further encouragement is to bo given to tho amateurs on Tuesday nest, whon the club will present to patrons a. programme on which six amateur bouts are set down for docision. Boxing is more than ever popular in Christchurch at the present time, and at the different schools there aro large numbers learning tho noble art of eelMofence. Amongst them ate soino very promising aspirants lor championship honours, and. on' Tuesday they will bo given every opportunity to display their pugilistic powers. In six amateur bout 3 the public fihould surely get good- valilo for its money. An added attraction is a bout between T. Harris, of Wellington, who Jia3 several victories in Australia to his credit, and T. Long, of Christchurch,. who has shown his ability in fast and clever boxing. This contest is certain to provide a willing encounter, and the supporters of cach/m&n ale '< equally confident. Tho Caledonian Hall, in which tho contests will bo held; is an ideal place for tho sport, providing, aB it does, every comfort for patrons and com"petitois. In tho expectation of enjoying a first-olass evening's entertainment, there should bo a record attendance of tho public when the gong announces tho start of proceedings on Tuesday next.
