SPORTING.

Nominations for the Wellington Eac--sng Club's Winter Meeting close on Monday, at 9 p.m.

Acceptances for the Ashburfon County Eating Club's Winter Meeting are due on Monday, at o p.m.

6 The special trains for the combined meeting of the Banks Peninsula Eacing Club and Brackenfield Hunt, Trill leave Christehurch station for Eiccartori'"today at 11.15 a.m. and 11.30 a'.m-.,-not at the times advertised earlier in the week. A frequent tram'service Trill also be in commission. The charges for admission Trill be Is to course," and 2s Gd to the enclosure. With (lie sunshine of the past few days, flic track ■will bo in excellent order, and with a varied programme embracing, crosscountry, flat, and trotting events, there Bhould be a good attendance. The day's programme will be opened at noon with the Peninsula Hack Steeplechase, and though there are only four runners, the horses have all had experience over the country to be covered, and a very interesting contest should ensue. Cashman is probably the most sober fencer of the four engaged, and he will have a good following on that account. Lord Ashlea and Grim Joke should also race well, but Apex, in the little schooling he lias done, has not shown much liking for the business.

It will be something of a novelty to see thirty-four trotters in action in a raco at Eiccarton. This is the number paid up for in the Ellcsmcrc Trot, and Iho big course will give the runners moro latitude than they enjoy on trotting tracks. Nothing in the field can be written out, but possibly Nipper, Tctrachord, Wild Hebe, and Percy Dillon will be most in demand' if produced.

The top-weight in the Halswell Hack Handicap, Enare, will be hard to beat, but the four immediately., below, him on the card can all be depended on to race well. Serotina may .not be quite forward enough to see out the seven furlongs, but being a sister _to Owlscombo and half-sister to Nightwateh and Wise Bird must bo considered until experience in public proves that she is not up to the family standard. The Brackonfiold Handicap, run over a mile and a-quartcr, should, provide a good race. .Sunny Loch and Jubilant will carry tho bulk of tho investments, and should give their supporters an excellent run for their money. Ferino and Kilbirnio, on Ambcrley and Bangiora form, will also race well, as should Barn Owl, but the two first-mentioned read best. ...

Gay Juliet and Tho Cheat will be favoured by the distance,' ono mile, in tho Llttlo River Handicap, the field for which may bo reduced .to fivei runners should Ferino and Kilbirnio start in the preceding event. Moorland, of tho other runners, should race best.

The card for tho Kaituna Trot contains tho names of a number of probable starters in tho Ellcsmere Trot, and form in the latter race may fto worth following, in the Kaituna. Twjk. Among tho fresh horses, Audom'inionand Lord Clan may be tho most

Castellan and Lava appear to have tho Akaroa Handicap to themselves, their threo opponents having" shown littlo br no form this soason.

Scvoral horses ongagod at tho Meeting at Biccarton to-day, were sprinted a few furlongs' on tho JTo. 1 grass yestofday. They .included Gay Juliet, Jubilant, Sunny -Loch, Gay Life, Lava, and The Cheat. At his third attempt Apex (B. Choat) ■went over the brush double and sod wall at Biccarton yesterday, .but on reaching tho brush at the top of the. straight, ran off as ho had done at tho double. Ho is a good jumper when in the humour.

Tho English-bred horse Bold and Bad, brother to Saucy Sue, winner of this; year's Oaks, is to take tip stud duties next season at the Morphcttvillc stud, South Australia.

Tarloton is again being hacked about. Tho Nassau gelding has; put on condition during his respite from, work. Lord Ashlca (A. G. Campbell), and G'rim Joke (I. Tilson) 'were schooled separately over tho stbeplcchaso country at Rlecarton yesterday, giving satisfactory displays. Logan Chief is having a ; few days' spell, but will bo taken up again for the August Meeting at Addington. J. J. Kenncrley will also have Pedro pronto, Olonmel, and Dixie's Pride racing at that fixture. > '

Nativo Chiefj the twe>pea*-61d throequarter brother to Logan Chief, is to be gelded and will not be taken up again until next season. Sparkling Chimes and Mabon's Day are to bo returned to their owners, and !i further depletion of Kenncrley's team has occurred by tho salo of Bombardier to a North Mand owner. The tvninor mentioned has purchased in Australia the roan pacor "White Heather, by Honest Huon. Beta Peter is moving alone nicely under A. Cox's supervision, and the dual Cup winne:* promises to be well forward when the new season opens. For the Ashburton faces on Juno 26th and 27th, tho Railway Department has arranged a fast and convenient service, particulars of which afo advertised in this issue. Tickets at excursion fares are- being issued. Tho programme drawn up for the meeting to bo hold .on August 27th by the Auckland Trotting Club on tho occasion of tha visit of tho American Fleet, shows a total Of £4500 for sovon ©Vents. Tho Froo for AH, nine furlongs, will carry a stake of £750, and in order to attract tho best horsos, tho club will contribute £3O towards tho cxponso of each starter from the South Island. The six other ovents aro;— Handicap of £SOO, on© mile and a-half (limit 3.80); handieap of £SOO, twO miles (limit 4.44); handicap of £IOOO, IfWb nwes limit U. 34);, handicap Of £750, for trotters only, two miles (limit 4.45); handicap ,of £SOO, one inilo and a quarter (limit 2.55); handicap of £SOO, on© milo (limit^2.l4).
