MOUNT SOMERS. On Thursday afternoon the IMayiielri schoolboys visited Mo-nut Somors, wherethey played a football match against tho local boys. A good game was ■witnessed, hut the local backs wore little superior, the match going to Mount Somers by 1) points to G. J'or tho winners tries were scored by Halsey Hood (2) and Bernard Williams, and for the others by »S. Lilley. Mr E. C Wood held the whistle. Afternoon tea for the teams was arranged and supervised by the ladies. Ten degrees of frost were registered on Thursday morning.

BUSHSIDE. Messrs J. Chapman and J. Wolfrey convened a meeting of tho bachelors from the Alford Forest, Bushside, Stavclcy, and ft'pringburn districts in the Bushsido school on Tuesday evening. The convenors shamefacedly stated that thero wore at least sixty bachelors in the neighbourhood, and it was decided to hold a, combined bachelors' ball in the Staveley Hall on July 18th. The following committee was elected: Messrs J. Wolfrey, A. Syme, I'. Green, W. Bates, W. Chapman, J. Chapman, and E. Xaumann, the last two being appointed joint secretaries.

The roadside advertiser, driven by public opinion from the suburban districts, has made his appearance locally. It is -worthy of notice that most associations have declared themselves against this form of advertising.

MAYFIELD. In the Maytiold Band Hall, a. fair crowd met to hear Mrs Don, Dominion president of the W.C.T.I'. Mrs Williams, local president, introduced Mrs Don as oue of tho most unselfish and iintiriiin- workers for the common cause in Now Zealand. Mrs Don and her colleague, Mrs Norrie, wero presented with beautiful bounuets of flowers by two littb tots. Mrs Don based hev remarks uomi an Old Testament story, Tho Lruid of Cioschcji. SPRINGBURN. Since the beginning of the week the weather has boeii more settled, with bright days and hard frosts at night. There is a likelihood of the rural mail time-table being slightly revised so as to give a better service. The winter has affected many of the roads on the mail route, and they are prov-, ing something of an obstacle to regular service. The annual meeting for the purpose of electing the Springburn representatives of the Competitions Gommittse was held on Wednesday evening in the school. There was a fair attendance, and the Rev. R. Dickie and Messrs G. L. Bufton, J. T. Hooper, E. Xaumann, and A. Svme were appointed the district representatives. The absence of any constitution governing tlie election of district representatives, was commented upon and a recommendation was made to the Competitions Committee that rules be drawn up. The meeting was of the opinion that March would bo a suitable time to hold the competitions.
