NEW BRIGHTON NOTES.
Tides. It will be high tide on the beach today at'3.l p.m. and in the river at 4.28 p.m., and to-morrow at 3.49 p.m. and 3.17 p.m. respectively. The Churches. There will be a celebration of Holy Communion at both the S a.m. and 11 a.m. services at the Beach Church tomorrow. At the evening service the anthem "Thou Earth" (Spohr) will be given. There -will also be a service tomorrow evening at the North Beach schoolroom, the Rev. W. F. Knowlcs officiating. At the Methodist Church to-morrow, the services will be conducted at 11 a.m. by the Rev. A. J. Se.imer, and at 6 30 by the Rev. R. B. Tinsley. The anthem will be "Incline Thine Ear," soloist Mr Gill, who will also take the service in the South Brighton Hall at 6.30 p.m. At tho Presbyterian Church; to-mor-row morning, the Rev. J. S. Young will preach on "The Gateway of Fuller Spiritual Life," and in the evening, "Where John Knox's Faith First Cast Anchor." In the evening the solo will bo taken by Miss Langley.
Carnival Dance. The New Brighton Municipal Band hold a very enjoyable dance and euchre tourney in the Joyland Theatre, which had been tastefully decorated for the occasion. Music, was provided by Nuttail's Jazz Orchestra, while the supper arrangements were in the capable hands of the committee. In tho card tourney the prize-winners were as follows: Ladies: Mrs L. GriHben 1, Mrs Kersliaw 2, Mrs Grammar 3. Gentlemen: Mr E P. Miller 1, Mr A. Meredith 2, Mr p] A r incent 3. The lucky spot dance was won by Miss E. Ayling and ' Mr K. Burrows. Illustrated Lecture. A very interesting and instructive lecture was given in tho Pier Hall by Mr E. J. Howard, M.P., on Wednesday evening. The lecturer gave a resume 1 of his recent travels in South Africa, using limelight slides by way of illustration. The Mayor (Mr J. Gamble) presided, and there was a large attendance. Mr Howard has been asked to repeat the entertainment in aid of tho School Committeo funds. Church Social. A most enjoyable evening was spent at tho Anglican Church schoolroom on Wednesday, the vicar, the Rev. C. W. I. Maclaverty, presiding. The games and guessing competitions created no end of fun, whilst the musical and other items were excellently received.' Vocal and instrumental numbers were given by Madame Leighton and Miss Leighton, Mr and Mrs Scrimshaw, Mr Farmer, Mr Mulcock, and Mr Blackburn. Tho winner of the competitions were Mrs Saville and Miss Footc. Supper was served, and the proceedings conpluded with a dance. South New Brighton. It is understood that the Borough Council has received the necessary authority to raise a loan of & 11,500 for the construction of the 'bridge over the Avon at Bridge street, South New Brighton. A petition is being prepared for the signature of the residents, to bo presented to the Minister of Health, protesting against the proposal of the Drainage Board to extend the sewerage system into the Avon further northwards.
