LIFE SAVING.

rm MONICA THACKER SHIELD. The annual competition conducted by the Canterbury Head Centre, of tlio Royal Lifa Baving Society for the Monica. Thackcr Shield took place at the Tepid Baths last evening. The competition, which comprises the same conditions as those laid down for the award of merit of tho Society, is open to teams of four girls from anx affiliated organisation. The result was:— United Amateur Swimming Cub (Misses Phyllis Wilkinßon, Joyce Wilkinson, Miri Johnston and Dorcthy Dickinson; Mis 3 Irene Agas3iz instructress), 1. Liffe Saving Society (Mis3cs Lillian Copplestone, Olive Berry, Dorothy Chivera and Gladys o'Conr.ell; IS". McDcw'cll instructor), Christchurch Ladies' Amateur Swimming G'.ub "(Misftss. B. McGvath; L. Terns, E. McGrtyth and E.' Tapoer; Miss C. J. Couzins instruotressi, 3. The competition comprised release and rescue' testa on land and in the water, eurfaco diving for eh obstacle, and swimming breast-stroke and back-stroko. The winning tenia proved euperior both in tho land work tnd the water work, and had evidently had more training than had cither of tho otliei teams. Tho points gained by each team were:— v». Society .. 2151 l»l 409} Ladies' Club .. 207J 199 4'.<s* Commenting on tho work of tho teams, tha judges stated that the performance of the United Club's team was exceedingly good. In the land work they made a slight mistake: in the resuscitation drill the operators in all coses leaning too far forw&rd over tho • subjects. This was 3fault that applied to tho other teams also. Otherwise tho work of tho United Club team was almost perfect. The movements of the members of the Christchurch Ladies' Club toam were rather too jerky, and a slight amount of hesitation was shown in the releaso and rescue movements. In the case of the Read Centre team the hands in the resuscitation work wero not always in the correct position. Regarding tho water work, Mr. 81.-.nk stated that a great improvement had been shown as lompared with the previous year. Tho United Club team owed a great deal of their success to their instructress. The water work was generally good and the swimming was, oh tho whole, iexcellent. The standard set by the United Club team was a, very high one, but tho work of the»other teams was also very good.
