STREET ISLANDS.

To THE EDITOR OP "THE PBESS." Sir, —In my note about "Street Islands" on Saturday I meant to say that they might help to "wean," not "warn," pcoplo from their habit of crossing- the streets at all places aiul angles, as they do at present. I do not think tho time is yet ripe for the adoption of the London system at all street corners, but I am satisfied there are several points in Cathedral square and other lesser spaces where they would be of great service, 'both in directing wheeled traffic into defined channels and in facilitating safe passage for people on foot crossing the fair-wavs.-r-Yours, e,tc., GEOKGE GOULD. 'June 16th, 1925. ■ • THE NEW BISHOP. TO THE IBITOB OF "THE PBE3S." Sir. —To-day's news informs us that Canon Woodward has refused the offer of the bishopric, and that Bishop Barnes, of Birmingham, deplores the lack of theological scholarship among the adhorents of tho Church. Lack of modem knowledge of Biblical criticism, according to this advanced ■ Bishop, plays into ■ the hands of .'• tho AngloCatholic party, for whom the ultimate goal is the iloman Church! Be that as it may, it seems to tho writer very advisable' that Anglican congregations should be kept well abreast of the age in tho matter or what is commonly called the higher criticism. No doubt many of tho older members of the churches wish for no mental change, but even they will admit that the'old legends, more or less accepted fifty yoara ago, no longer .grip the mind of youth, and it seems to me- that our clergy, should do their best' to satisfy enquiring youth as well as catering for old age. Honestly, I think that tho "mana" of. tho English Church, and not its doctrine, retains such young men as may be found within its walls. It would perhaps help tho Synod in its selection of a Bishop, if a vote were taken of tho congregations of the diocese on the question whether or no an increased attention should bo given to modern Biblical criticism. —Yours, etc., ANGLICAN.
