RECEPTION AT THE WOMEN'S CLUB.
It seems unnecessary to mention that the members of the Canterbury Women's Club assembled in record- numbers last night to do honour to her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson, whom they entertained at a reception in tho club rooms in Manchester street. Her Excellency had first attended the dinner party arranged by the Chamber of Commerce, and she was preceded to the club reception by her daughter, Miss Fergusson, Miss Mrs Algar Williams, and Miss Boyle. On her arrival Lady Alice Fergusson was welcomed by Mrs Henry Holland, president of the club, who expressed the great pleasure felt by the members at the presence amongst them of her Excellency who, shortly after her arrival in New Zealand, had honoured tho club by graciously consenting to accept the position of warden. Mrs Holland hoped that her Excellency would pav frequent and more leisured visits to Christchurch, when, she rather rashly promised, the weather would treat her and his Excellency more kindly. Lady Alice Fergusson, who was received with prolonged applause, thanked Mrs Holland and the members of the club for their warm welcome, and assured them of her pleasure at being amongst thenj. Mrs Hollrnd then presented Lady Alice with a beautiful boiiquet and Miss Fergusson with a posy of violets.
Lady Alice Fergusson wore a handsome gown of black panne velvet with | diamante embroidery; Miss Fergusson wore a. pretty trock of silver grey brocade, with a narrow band of brilliants ! outlining the neck and a pearl and brilliant ornament at the left side; Miss Orr-Ewing wore black marocain with a scintillating brilliant ornament at the sidieand a white fur stole; Mrs Algar Williams wore cinnamon, brown beaded georgette and a lettuce green fringed shawl; Miss Bovle, grey lace over silver tissue and white fur wrap. The decorations, the work of Miss Grand, were particularly effective. Bowls of golden brown chrysanthemums' and autumn foliage, with here and there an artistically arranged bowl cf hydrangeas, adorned the stage, .and on her Excellency's table was a, crystal bowl of Christmas rose*. The following excellent musical programme _ was much enjoyed : —Trios, piano, violin and 'cello, "Elegie and Allegro" (Arensky), Mrs J. E. As a memento of the occasion, two handsome souvenir the finished wcrk of Miss Stoddart, were presented to.Lady Alice Fergusson and her daughter.
