The abolition of the post ,of Gov-ernor-General was recommended by Mr J. S. Woodsworth (Labour) m the House of Commons when the vote for the maintenance of the Governor-Gen-eral's residence was before the House. Mr Woodsworth was supported by another Labour member, Mr Irvino, of Calgary. Both disclaimed any inten-, tion of disparaging tho present or any other incumbent of tho post. The recommendation, Mr Woodsworth declared, •was in tho interests of economy. He thought tho Chief Justice of Canada should discharge the duties, and save the expense, which ho estimated at 500,000 dollars yeariy. ,: Tho Minister of Railways, tho Hon. G. P. Graham, who was leading the House, said Lord Byng had proved himself a man of tho people, a real man, and a Democrat. So long as the- British Government sent to. Canada such mon as Lord Byng, ho felt Canada would be benefited by tho present system. Tho discussion then dropped.
