BARRIERS BROKEN DOWN. (special to "the pbess.") AUCKLAND, June 16. In reference to tho removal of the barrier separating first and general divisions in tho railway service, tho Prime Minister (the Hon. J. G. Coates), in his speech at Pukekoho last night, said there would bo no objection to merit being tho basis of promotion. While members of tho first or clerical division might not like it, a man of ability in the general division should bo ablo to go to tho top right through tho first division.
