TTMARU. Social and Personal Airs R. F. Hill (Meremero street) motored back from Christehurch on Monday. Miss Irene Cordener arrived from Australia yesterday, and is the guest of Mrs F. C. May (Elizabeth street). Mrs L, B. Pearson (Trafalgar street) returned yesterday from Christehurch. Mrs Geo. Murray and Miss Murray arrived from "Braemar" yesterday to spend a few days in Timaru. Miss May Scott (Cannington) is tho guest of Mrs K. McLennan (Wai-iti road). Miss Molly Murray ("Braemar") is staying with Mrs Manscl (Nelson terrace). Miss Audrey Cracroft Wilson (Christchurch) will be tho guest of Mrs Maurice lo Cren (Beverley road) for tho next few days. Mrs Arthur Martin (Martinborough), who has been the guest of Mrs B. IT. Bhodes ("Came") for some weeks, left for the North yesterday. Mrs George Bhodes and Miss Shona Bhodes ("Beverley") will arrive from Christehurch to-day. . Mrs E. J. le Cren (Maori Hill) returned from Christehurch on Monday. Mr S. G. Raymond, K.C. (chairman of the War Pensions Appeal Board), loft yesterday for Dmiedin. Mr J. Caughley (Director of Education) is expected in Timaru to-morrow, when he will confer with tho High School Board on various matters affecting the schools.

The Hon. Sir Jas. Parr, Minister of Education, was interviewed by Mr F. J. Rolleston, M.P., at the Timaru railway station yesterday, and in responso to his request promised to spend Friday afternoon in Timaru. Sir James will arrive at 1.50, and after inspecting some of the schools will receive doputations at the Municipal Chambers at 8.30. He will leave for the North by tho second express tho same afternoon. Tee Weather. Brilliant sunshine and n cloudless sky yesterday succeeded the dull cold woather experienced during the weekend. Sis degrees of frost were registered yesterday morning. "The Sleeping Beauty." With the object of assisting the South Canterbury Orphanages, Charities Unlimited, Christehurch, are staging the musical pantomimo "Tho Sleeping Beauty," at the Theatre Eoyal, Timaru, this evening and to-morrow afternoon and evening. In this production, under the direction of Miss Ngaio Marsh, the old theme is presented in a very entertaining manner, and lis tho sleeping princess dreams through the ages little stories are charmingly and humorously enacted until tho princess wakes to the spirit of jazz and the year 1925. The book of "Tho Sleeping Beauty" haß been written for Cliarities Unlimited, by Miss Gwen E. Merrit, and the scenery has been specially painted by Mr R. McKenzie, of Christehurch.

Shopping and Home Week. Definite steps have been taken towards the holding of a Shopping Week in Timaru. It had been intended to hold a Shopping Week in May of this year, but on account of the epidemic the proposal was held over until a more suitable time. The present scheme, fatlieTed by the Timaru Publicity Association, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Eetailers' branch of the Employers' Association, will follow American lines, and will have as its object the bringing of people to Timaru during tho winter months. Accordingly, a Home and Shopping Week is to be held in the middle of September. Home Week will be held in conjunction with Shopping Week, and fathers and mothers will bo invited to write to their sons and daughters asking them to come home for one week. It is proposed that a civic welcome should be tendered to visitors, and that football matches and sports gatherings; should be held in the afternoons and concerts in the evenings. Streets and shops are to be made as attractive as possible with liberal displays of flagg and bunting, and a spirit of carnival fostered. * Blind Soldiers' and Sailors' Pund. The trustees of the New Zealand Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Blind Soldiers' and Sailors' Pund have received £5 3s 6d, boing the Timaru Bowling Club's annual Stahsell Shield donation.
