OKAWS BAY. ■Mrs James Boleyn was hostess' at an evening in'honour of Miss Nan Livingston, whose wedding takes place to-day in :Christchurch. An enjoyable evening was spent iu progressive euchre, the winners being Mrs A. McKay, and Mr Korto, Mrs G. Dibble atfd Mr G. Boleyn, jun., taking the * consolation prizes. Miss Livingston, who has resided in the Bay since her arrival from Kilmarnock, Scotland, a few years ago, was tho recipient of the good wishes of her friends, speeches being mado by Mr James Boleyn and Mr. George Harris. Miss Livingston suitably responded.' Those present wero:—Mesdamcs G. Harris, James Boleyn, Gilbert Dibble, Andrew McKay, Misses Nan Livingston and Botty Boleyn, Messrs .James. Boleyn, George Boleyn (sen.), Korte, George Harris, Gilbert Dibble, George Boleyn (jun.), Masters W. Spurr, Donald, and Jim Boleyn. - Mr Korte and Mr G. Boloyn, both of Taranaki, are the guests of Mr Jas. Boleyn (Stonoy Bay). Mrs P. Spurr is tho guest of Mrs A. McKay. With the object of ..holding a residents' ball a meeting, was., convened, at which thero were present:-Mesdanies H. Muir, S. Hi Thomas, Misses Euby Haines, G. Box, Alice Ware, Daphne Harris, Stella Harris, Winnie Bobinson, Messrs H. Muir, E. Mason, E. Haines, Eeg. Mason, H. Mason, J. Haines, W. Eobinson, E. Spurr, Floyd Mason, and Arthur Spurr. It was. decided to hold the ball next week, and. to obtain aa orchestra from Christchurch.
I SOUTH MALVERN. The local branch of the Plunket Society held its monthly meeting in tho Glentunnel Hall. District Nurse Currie was in attendance for the last time before leaving to be married. After the ordinary business was transacted, a gift afternoon was held, and a number of beautiful and. useful gifts was received. Mrs John Deans, president of the branch, in asking Nurse Currie to accep*t the gifts, as a mark of their esteem, referred to the good work she had done during her term of office and wished her all happiness in her future life. Nurse Currie briefly responded. Present:—Nurse Currie, Mrs John Deans, Mesdames F. S. Barrett, H. A. Boyle, S. Cherry, H. D. Davenport, G. C. Derrett, E. A. Gray, R. D. Gray, M.-H. Gibson, F. W. The next monthly meeting will be held at Hororata, when the new district nurse will be in attendance. Nurse Currie's future home will be in Otago. Playing in the Malvern Sub-Union's Junior competition on Saturday, Glentunnel defeated Hororata team by 11 points to 3. Tries were scored for Glentunnel by J. Stuart, Ivor Charles, and F. Hinks, while J. Fever converted a try. For Hororata, ' H. Thorns scored a try. Mr R. Longstaff was referee. At Kirwee; Glentunnel Seniors defeated Kirwee by 3 points to nil. Evan Charles kicked a penalty goal for Glentunnel. Mr G. Coffey was referee.
' HORORATA. The wintry conditions prevailing over tlio week-end seem to have changed for the better,, and it is hoped a spell of frosty weather will,,set in to allow tho soil to dry. During the week-end 96 points of rain were recorded. Owing to tho in<?J»_ic<nt weather, tho golf match agaiiist Lake Coleridge had to bo postponed and football on Saturday was played under most unfavourable conditions. . ___ ; Playing at Hororata, tho> jiInToT football team was defeated 'by Olentunncl juniors by 11 points to three points. For Hororata Harry Thome scored. "Mr G. Timmings' controlled the game. After tho match a dainty, afternoon tea was dispensed to tho players in the Hall, by Mrs G. 0. Deirett. Arrangements are well in hand for tho monster euchro tournament in. aid of the Plunket Society Funds. This function will take the place, of tho usual ball. The wintry conditions prevailing over the week-end seriously affected the play on the links. Tho results of the Bogey Matcli were: T. 15. • Pearson 2 down, AV. AVillsteed 5 down, C. C. SPRINGFIELD. Springfield is having rather more than its share of wintry weather. Heavy rain, accompanied by sleet, 6et in on AVednesday and continued until Friday, when it was found that about two inches of snow had fallen during tho night. A thaw set in at midday on Saturdav, when the snow rapidly disappeared. These pleasant conditions; flid not last long, however, for rain and sleet were again falling: by 4 o'clock, and at night a fierce gale sprang up and blew with uiiaLatctUfury till late on Sunday morning. Monday was very cold and cloudy, rain again sotting in by evening l ;-the temperature is uncomfortably low. The mountains are heavily coated with snow.
BURNHAM. AVork on' the land is at a. standstill owing to the recent bad weather, and tho sowing of autumu wheat is almost impossible. Boy passengers on the Friday morning train to Christchurch, becoming impatient at t]»e long wait of twenty, minutes at tho Buniham Station for the south express to pass, whiled away tho time- by snowballing one another. Tho snow, which lay to a depth of two inches, was obtained from off the railway trucks which had como off the Mount Somers branch line. Mrs Aubrey Scott is visiting her mother at Woodjjury. Miss Cooke, of Lyttelton,.. was the guest of Mrs Coleman for a few days last week. ".
DUNSANDEL. Prior to their marriage; Miss Jean Smith and Mr CM. Sheat were the guests of the Dunsandel Church choirs at a kitchen evening. A pleasant time was spent in games and competitions. The guests received a good collection of girts. . , In spite of stormy weather, ; there was a good attendance at the Dunsandel Hall on the occasion of a social held in honour of Mr A. S. McPherson, a member of the railway staff, who has been transferred, on promotion, to the relief staff. Mr H. F. Wright made the guest a presentation' of a gold
