FLOOD DAMAGE.
WRITS AGAINST LOCAL BODIES. (PRESS ABSOCIiTION TELEOIUM.) MASTERTON, Juno 16. A sequel to the heavy -floods in December last, when tho bursting or a dam at Lansdowne caused considerable damage to residential property, carrie before) tho Borough Council this evening when the Town Clerk announced that he had' been served with five writs, the'total amount claimed being £1991. Plaintiffs and their claims are:' Thomas Bacon £307, D. K. Logan £152, M. C. Marshall £269, L. A. Wadharn £966, and. M. H. Fly £296. Defendants are the Mayor and Councillors and burgesses of Masterton, the chairman, councillors and inhabitants of Masterton County and the trustees in the estate of th'e late Mrs A.' ,P. Williams, namely H. G.' Williams, G. C. Williams, Mrs E. A. Russell (London) and Mrs M. A. Burge (Wales). Claim is made against the defendantsjointly, and severally, and in the alternative action is taken against the three parties on the following grounds: (a) The Masterton borough as being' the occupiers and users of the land'on which the dam was situated. (b) The Masterton County for alterations to the dam which it is alleged weakened the structure. (c) Against the trustees as owners of the land. . The Council decided to # defend the action and to. engage senior counsel. Many owners whose property was damaged at the time have -not lodged claims. '■
