NORTH CANTERBURY.
RANGIORA. The Loyal Bangiora Lodge, M.tJ., 1.0.0. F., met on Monday night, when N.G. Bro. P. "W. White presided over a good attendance. Medical certificates were received in favour of two candidates, and after a ballot, they were initiated into the Order. One candidate was nominated for membership. It. was reported that Bro. S. Avers, senior lodge trustee, would celebrate his golden wedding this week, and it was decided to extend the congratulations of the members to him on the occasion. At the conclusion of the business a social gathering, in which'members' wives and lady friends participated, -was held. The tirst of the winter card socials in connexion with tho Bangiora Bowling, Tennis and Croquet Club was held on Monday. The prizewinners wero Mrs H. Jones, and Mr T. Vincent. It was decided to hold the socials fortnightly, and to dispense with the usual supper. The prizes for the next evening have been promised by Mrs C. I. Jennings and Mrs M. Scott. _A meeting of the committee of_ the North Canterbury Ploughing 3fat. ; c7> Association was held yesterday, Mr James Wyllie presiding. Last year's programme was adopted, with the exception of Class C. which was altered to read for competitors who have not won more than one first priz«. Class F. was also altered to read, for competitors who have not won more than one first prize. It was decided to add to the programme a class for motorfractors, not less than 3-furrows. It was decided to follow other Associations and not to allow competitors to do any hand work while engaged ploughing. It was reported that the only suitable ground offering was a paddock of 30 acres, and one of lo acres by Mr W. Moir at Flaxton. Tt was decided to write and thank Mr Moir for his offer and accept it.
CHEVIOT. The Cheviot Ladies' Hockey Club held a very successful dance in the Public Hall, which was nicely decoOited for the occasion. Music for danc- I ing was supplied by Mr W. Ross Smith, and extras were contributed' by Mr J Glasson and the la.dies J orchestra, composed of the Misses T. Savage,' M. McDonald, M. Sloss, V. Petrie, and S. Flaherty. The orchestra made a very favourable impression on its first public appearance. Messrs L. M. Gibson and It. Wilkinson acted as M.C.'s. The Hurunui Sub-Union's competitions were continued on Saturday, when Kaikoura played Cheviot. The matches were played in very wintry weather, and on a very wet ground. The junior match resulted in a draw, both teams scoring three points. Mr G-. Walls was referee. The 6enior match resulted in a win for Cheviot by 13 points to 6. Mr F. It. Berg was refeifee. In spite of the very inclement weather, there was a very fair attendance at the Cheviot Football Club's, Danceon Saturday evening, and an enjoyable time was spent. Music for dancing was supplie4 by Mr W. Ross Smith, and extras were played by Mr J. Glasson. Iteal winter -weather is being experienced in this district at present, there, being only one fine day last week. Gil Saturday and Sunday a strong southwest wind was blowing, accompanied by heavy rain and sleet showers. Snow is in evidence well down on the hills. The services in connexion with the Presbyterian Church wore conductedon Sunday last by Mrs J. W.. Williams, of Sumner, who gave interesting and instructive addresses to good congregations. ... '
