THE POLITICAL SITUATION.
FRANKLIN BY-ELECTION.
(Special to "thi press.") WELLINGTON, Juno 10. Information received iu Wellington is to tho effect that Reform is confident that its candidate (Mr E. D. Mo Lennan) will bo returned for Franklin in the by-eiection, which takes j>laco to-morrow, but at the sanio time no effort is being spared to bring tho campaign to a successful conclusion. It is considered that tho chief danger lies in tho Reformors becoming fident of victory. The l'usion Question. Recently tho Hon. Sir Heatop Rhodes, who holds office in tha Coates Ministry, was reported as having expressed an opinion in favour of fusion. "I have not," said Sir Heaton, "stated my views with regard to fusion. "What I did say was that the papers would lead one to suppose that the Reformers were in favour of fusion, the Liberals were in favour of fusion, and tho Labour Party was in favour of fusion. I did not say I was personally in favour of it. We do not know what is in the minds of the Liberal Party, and the Reformers will not say what is in their minds until they know the minds of tho Liberals."
