COUNTY COUNCILS.
KAIKOURA. The Kaikoura, County Council met- on Saturday. Present—C'w. James Boyd (chairman!, D. Boyd, P. Acton-Adams, G. I). Stnitli, E. H. Workman, C. Fanncll, G. Eaton and G. Shand. An apology was received from Cr. F. Cvtrran.
Mrs Miigeey wrote thanking- the Council /or its motion of condolence, which she stated she most gratefully appreciated. The Department, of Internal Affairs wroto asking to he Fupplied -with information about places of interest in the district. It was agreed to forward particulars.
The Rananca Borough Council wrote soliciting co-operation regarding the following resolution:—"That, the Government, be urged to provide pensions for the victims of infantile paralysis." Received. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote elating that he had been advised by tho Resident Engineer, Public "Works Department, that he was recommending the Department to provide an additional £2OO towards tho Puhi Puhi road extension.
Slaughterhouse licenses were granted to Muiv and Pegg and A. Morton.
The Prime Minister advised that steps were being taken to provide a National Memorial to the late Rt, Hon. W. F. Massey, Knd commended the proposal to the" sympathetic consideration of the Council. It was decided to invite public subscriptions in terms of the request. The sanitary inspector (Mr C. D. Crra'ckshank) wrote, in reference to a defective drain on tho Esplanade. It. was decided to refer the communication to the owner of the property, and that further notice bo served. Mr K. Gibson tubmitted draft_of a notice to be served on occupiers of land who had not cleared obstructions from Lyell Creek. It was decided to serve the legal notice on offenders.
The Hon. J. G. Coates wrote thanking the Council for its telegram of congratulation respecting bis election a,s Prime Minister. The Eesident Engineer forwarded approved, plans for an additional 15 chains of now formation at the south end of Puhi Puhi East road.
The secretary of the. Kaikoura, Fishermen's Association wrote, pointing out that repnirs to the foot of the new slip had not received attention, as promised by the Council. The matter was referred to the cn?incer and wharfinger. W. J. Smith's tender for erecting fence at Puhi PuKi was accepted. Mr James Boyd was unanimously reelected chairman of tho Council for the onsuing year. The Resident Engineer advised that tho Charwell Forks road deviation had been completed two months ago, and asked if the Council was prepared to take over its maintenance. It was agreed to do eo, provided a slin on the load is removed. The Public "Works Department wrote with reference to protective work at Hapuka, and ofEerod a subsidy of £IOO towards protecting J. J. Mackle's property. N. Trolove wrote in reference to road leading to his property, which was now like a watercourse and needed urgent attention. It was decided to have tho water tables cleaned out and 50 yards of metal spread. E. Brick claimed £B6 for work done at Blue Duck road. The chairman said the Public Works Department would not recognise the claim, and the Council could do nothing. , _, , . Cr. D. Boyd proposed that tho new Pulu road be opened, as the surfacemen could not possiblv keep the old road in order The chairmnn said the Department would probably object to this step being taken -until the road had been passed: Providing this difficulty was overcome lie was in favour of the proposal. This step was agreed to. Tho Kaikoura Beautifying Society wrote in regard to r>ro»osed work at Lyell Creek, and it was agreed that the engineer mark out the road line as requested. On the motion of Cr. Smith, it was agreed to raise a loan of £SOOO for road and bridge work..
AMURI. At tho last meeting of the Amuri County Council (there wore present: Crs. M. Bethell (chairman), T. Bcaven, J. W. Black, H R. Davison, R. L. Jameson, W. Hanmer Atkinson, W. Harold Atkinson, R. Mercer, and G. O. Rutherford. ; Mrs C A. Massey forwarded a telegram thanking the Council for its expression of sympathy in her recent sad bereavement A letter was received from the. Prime Minister's office relative to the construction of a suitable niomorial to the late Prime. Minister. It was decided to support the propopai and place subscription lists in all tho . county stores. ■'•',,,,'• Tho chairman reported that in company with Crs. Davison and Jameson and the county engineer, he had met Mr W. G. Morrison who wished lo exchange a portion of tho Hurunui-St. Leonard's road running through the scrub for a new line, connecting with the Main North road. After reviewing the whole situation, it was agreed to recommend the Council to grant the exchange on certain conditions. . . Mr W. F. Williams, contractor for the supply of metal on the Whalesback, wroto stating that owing to wot.weather and floods he had been unable to get on with tho work. It was decided to inform him that it was now too late in the winter to start the work, the month of September being named as more suitable. The Highways Board, Public Works Department, Wellington, forwarded the authorities for the following works : —Construction of culvert, Hanmer road, £6B 10s; Wandle bridge, £500; Toad deviation at Peach's, £SOO. The district engineer, Christchurch, wrote advising that the design for McDonald's bridge at tho Mason river had been approved. The. Public WoTks Department wrote advising that the Council's acceptance of Mrs Hoff's tender for the approaches and gabions at the Wandle river bridge had been approved; but stated that they could not accept, or recommend, tho acceptance of. touders for the deviation at Peach's cutting. A. S. Kingsbury, butcher at Hanmer Springs, applied for a slaughterhouse license, which was granted subject to tho approval of the Minister of Agriculture,
The county solicitors wrote stating that they had received the consent ~of Mrs F. D. Martin and Messrs J. H. Davison and E. B. Davison to the putting through of Mr E. B. Davison's road, arid were proceeding with the necessary transfers. Mr J. S. Kennedy, Culvcrden, wrote urging that a permanent bridge over School creek be erected as soon as possible. It was decided to inform Mr Kennedy of the position regarding the bridge generally, and also to state that a temporary bridge was being built to carry stock and light traffic, and to act as a by-paes when the permanent ■structure was being, built. The secretary; Hanmer Springs Cemetory Trustees, forwarded a 6tatcment of accounts which showed a debit balance of 4s 2d. It was decided to make a grant of £», subject to the cemetery being made thoroughly rabbit proof. _ , Mr H. .Farrow, Hanmer Springs, wrote stating that a drain was partially blocked on the Wcodbank road and required cleaning. He also desired to know the a-nouri of "thirds" accrued on his property, or section, and pointed out that the itaiubgc area below the bridge on Flax Creek was backing water up. The engineer was directed to attend to the matter.
K. C. Latter, Cloudy Range, wrote pointing out the necessity of getting his cutting! repaired as son as possible. It was decided to do the work as tosu as men a'nd teams were available.
W. A. Nicholls wrote foregoing his payment for scrub clearing, provided the Council erected u culvert across a water-race crossing on the Grampian road. It was decided to thank him tor*his effer.
.1. S. Kennedy, Culvexdcr., wrote asking that Highfieid street be metalled trom the hotel to nis jate. It wr.s derided to do the woik.
J. F. Banks, secretary to the Rotherham Domain Board, wrote asking if the Council wouid put in a new culvert entrance ti the Domain. It was decided to tupply the timber and material free, providing the. committee erected the cuivert under tne supervision o! the county engineer.
K. Roberta wrote pointing out that the grass road was in a very bad st-Uo of repair, xte asked for end was granted permission to put iu a pipe-way opposite his frontage. It was decided that the Rotherham Riding councillors and the county engineer inspect the Cemetery road, Rotlicrham, with a view to having some improvements carried out while the grader is in the locality. It was deddxt to apply for the following grants:—Hason nver bridge ct Waiau, £42' JO; Glynn Wye, groynes, £300; Sanderson's road metalling, £75; deviation Hawkswood road, £'1000; Leach's road, formation and metalling, £100: Bsnmer road, maintenance, £150: Giynn Wye road, repairs, £SO; Hanmer street, formation £550; Council rind £SO.

A deputation from the South Seas Exhibition Committee wailed on the Council and asked for a contribution towards the cost pt a Canterbury Court. Plans of the Exhibition were shown and details given. Cr. Croft stated that the approach 'to Keiss Bridge from the Amberlcy .end needed straightening, and that a poplar tree stood in tne way of traction engines with plant eettir-j straight approach on to. the bridge. The clerk was instructed to interview Jlr Fulton with a view to setting back the ter.ee so as to give necssssry apprca-ch. Cr. Jcrr.js mentioned that pigsoes were Etil! in tine close to a roadway. They were ordered to be removed. Cr. Reta.Uick statsd that the Railway Deportment in extending the crossing and culvert at Grcney's iced hid placed a 12 inch drain pi->a' in the sod bank, thereby diverting the water down his load frontage, and in time of heavy rain it would flood hi 3 land.' It was decided to protest egainst the placing of the pipe in. the bank. Cr. Wyliio mentioned that repairs were needed oa Peter's road acd r-roteetiva works at the Council's reserve, Btoncy Creek, Sefton. Messrs Wyliie and Peach asd others would assist with the protective works.
