Mr 'O'l-msDy-Uoro states that the con-: triDution oi tiie JJomimons to naval defence takes tlic iorm ot maintenance oi t.iieir own naval iorces and establishments uy tne Governments of (Janaua, the Commonwealth of Australia, New Zealand and tne Union of youth Africa. The amounts provided in the Estimates of the following parts of the Empire for the year IVn-Zo are: — United Kingdom : £55,800,000. Expenditure per nead,' £1 4s lOd. Amount spent on naval defence.for every £IOOO L-i total import and export trade, £25 3s M.
Canada : 1,400,000 dollars. Expenditure per head 0.15 dollars. Amount spent for every 10G0 dollars, of total import and export trade, 0.74 dollars. Commonwealth of Australia: £2,318,104. Expenditure per head, Bs. Amount spent for every £IOOO of total import, and export trade, £8 14s. There are, in addition, special appropriations of £3.000,0C0 for naval construction and £1,500,000 for defence purposes generally, which are proposed to be expended over a number of years. New Zealand: £523.079. Expenditure per bead, Bs. Amount spent tor every £IOOO of total import and export trade, £5 os Bd. Union of South Africa: £142,035. Expenditure per head, Is Sd. Amount spent for every £IOOO of total import and export trade, £1 0s Id. Willi regard to the colonies and protectorates, the contributions to Impel'; ial defence made by the Governments of Hong Kong, Straits Settlements, Ceylon, and Mauritius are paid, not to the Admiralty but to the "War Office.
