GLASS WINDOWS.
Glass windows, according to a committee of scientists aud doctors who havjj been investigating the question of conserving child life on behalf of tho city of Boston (America), are responsible for much of the ill-health of toda- says the- -'Uaily iSxpv&ss." Kccent investigations Have uistlosed that many or the plants and animals are unabtj to complete their development and live normal nves unless they receive ul-tra-violet radiation from tne sun, says the committee m its reparto. \v e knowthat a great many ailments of man can bo traced to the invention or glass, for these rays, so beneficial to the development and support of life, are unable to pass througu our windows. For example, rickets is a disease which may bo caused by a lack ot that part of sunlight stopped by glass. We find that surprisingly large numbers of cases of painful cflildbirth can be" traced directly to boms that have beeiv deformed from lack of thess parts of sunlight. Certain animals which are nocturnal in their habits aro apparently abb to obtain a substitute tor sunlight in their food. Further, if certain kinds of food are exposed to tiltra-violet light, they acquiro-anti-rachitic qualities. This raisES tho question of whether or not greenhouse foods have the same nutritive value as foods raised under natural conditions.
I According to many hotelkeepers (says an Adelaide message) the number of "women who-drink in hotels, especi- • ally first-class houses, has largely in- ! creased, during the past few years. Since the war women seem to consider that thej- are entitled to the same pleasures as men. They openly go in for smoking and drinking. The pro- : prietors wish to discourage the pracL lice of women visiting lir—ls.
