Acceptances for the Napier Park Bac ing Club's Winter Meeting close to> day.

Car-nwock will bo ridden by S. Walls IB his engagements at Napier Park. sh.c Spalpeen gelding is already at the oceuc of action.

It is reported that Master Peter injured a roundbonc during the running of the Great Northern Steeplechase, but the resultant soreness was soon worked off on his return to Wanganui ]ast Friday.

.Lochson's .withdrawal from the Patea Countv Cup run at Waverley on Satindav liiav mean that he has not fully recovered from the trouble which prevented him going to Ellerslic. Ho is nominated for events at the Hawke's Bav Winter Meeting, but even if he fulfils his engagements he will hardly have had enough racing to make him ,-is fit a horse as last year for the Grand National Hurdles in August.

Podokcs, who ran third in the first division of the Bombay Handicap at the Franklin Meeting on Saturday, is an English-bred mare by Eock Flint •from Galloping Girl. She had not raced since the 1022-23 season, when she ran twice unplaced, once at flic Bay of Plenty Meeting hold at Avondale and once at the Opotiki Meeting held at Takapuna. In both these races there were big fields, and want of experience may have had n good deal to do with her running. Now that she has got into the money a win may come her way at some of the country fixtures.

In the House of Commons last month, Colonnl Day asked the Home .Secretary whether he was aware of the cruelty inflicted upon' horses entered for* steeplechase, races, and, in view of the num ber of accidents both to animals and riders, was lie prepared to suggest legislation with a view to a maximum height and length of jumps being imposed at all steeplechase/ race meetings in England, so as to prevent, as far as possible, horses being impaled upon jumps, which' was witnessed at the last Grand National Race Meeting. Mr G. Locker-Lampson informed the Colonel that tho answer to. both parts of his question was in the negative. "J-T.II. Ago, Khan seems fortunate each season in having good two-year-olds to carry his colours in England, and this year he has Moti Mahal, who won the Newmarket Two ; Ycar-Old Stakes last month. She was not fancied by the connexions of the Whatcombe stable, but sho is a fine-actioned filly, and can evidently go (says an exchange). Bred by tho Agft Khan, and foaled on March 10th, Moti Mahal is a grey daughter of Tho Totrorch fr6m Maglona, by Fugleman out of Rayon, by Diamond Jubilee. At tho December sales of 1922 tho Aga Khan purchased Maglona for -4000 guineas when she was carrying this flllv.

In a' breeding competition in England recently \n which a mate was to bo »hosen for the Oaks Winner Straitlace, tho winner picked the 1922 Derby winner, Captain Cuttle,, and gave, the following reasons why the son of Hurry Oil should bo suitable:—" . . . For a colt, tlio central quarters show Cyllono 9, Galoptin 3, Thurio (2), and the sire's : root 22, nicely balanced .by Dark Ronald 9, Bay Bonald 3, Galbpin 3 (through Donovan); Matchmaker 22, and Thurio. (2), with four lines of No. 10. For a filly, the outer quarters give a ■flno'return of No. 12 through Best Man and Marsyns, blending with Marcovil and Springfield (and No. 12 has'all tho potency of" a running, family). . Tho bottom'lines aro peculiarly adapted to tho sire's descent from Matchem, as Strafford brings in West Australian twico to Barcaldinc 23; tho mare's root 3 to Marco 3, and the stout.blood of Hagioscope 23, top and bottom."

FRENCH RACING.

THE FRENCH DERBY. Cbt cabl*—fbbss (australian avd k.2. cablb association.)(Received June 15th, 1.5 p.m.) PARIS, June 14. Following is the result of the PRIX DU JOCKEY CLUB, of 200,000 fr. For three-year-olds. 2400 metres. M.. E. Martinez dc Hoz's gr c BELFONDS by-Isard ll.—La Buire ... 1 Due Decaxe's b c Pitchonry by Carmobie —Prude '.. .. .. .. 2 A. K. Macomber'a br c The Sirdar by McKinley—Gibbs ... .. ... 3 [Under reasonable conditions, tho prominenco of Tho Sirdar at tho finish of tho French Derby on Sunday would furnish a. good line for comparison of the best English and French three-year-olds this year, but until the further details concerning tha French classic are avai.able, to discuss the relative merits of the different fields would be rather premature. It will bo remembered that The Sirdar ran third to Manna, and Zionist in the English Derby on May 37th, but the course that day was very heavy, and Manna, won in a canter. The conditions may have suited the English colt better, but he had won the Two Thousand Guineas in better going a month earlier, with clear daylight between him and his rivals, and it is to be hoped that in him another real champion, has been unearthed that will restore the English thoroughbred to tho high place which ho seemed to have lost after the successful invasion of England by French horses last season. Bel/onda and Pitchonry. who finished in front of The Sirdar in the French Derby, we're both fair two-year-olds last year, the former winning twice snd finishing second once and third once in seven races, for total stake earnings of 44,940 } r ., while Pitchonry earned 45,600 fr. as. the result of two wins and a dcad*heat" for third in four starts. The owner of the winner was fourth in the winning owners' list in Francs last season with twenty-two winners of 9t0,550 fr.]
