SUMNER ITEMS.

Tire Brigade. The Nuttall Shield Competition recently run off, was a one-man dressing event. The conditions included a run of 25 yards to the plug; taking out 50ft of hose and, from the union, Tunnirig out two 50ft lengths, finishing syds beyond the nozzles. The result was as follows: —Fireman R. Clarke (67sec) 1; Branchman E. O'Neill (68sec) 2; Branchman J. O'Neill (70scc) 3. Rifle Club. The increasing attendance at the weekly shoot of the Sumner-Redcliffs Ladies' Miniature Rifle Club is now a satisfactory feature, and the change of the night of meeting to Monday is evidently appreciated. Generally speaking the • shooting is showing improvement. The button for the best weekly' score was won by Mrs F. J. Glackin. Season's Institute. A well-attended meeting of the Sumner Guild of the Seamen's Institute was held at Mrs F. Coe's residence, in Euston street. Mrs Merry presided. Mrs A. L: F. Ledger reported on the hospital visiting. It was decided to thank Mrs Baker for cigarettes, and Mrs Bennett for magazines. Mesdames T. B. Boulton and Crosby undertook to do the visiting for July and Mrs Gray for August. The concert at Lytteltpn was fixed for the 25th inst. Miss Reese was elected a member. It was reported that the bridge party arranged by Mrs Gray was a great success. The proceeds amounted to £9. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs Gray for her assistance. Mesdames J. M. B. Crawford and H. J. Marriner were thanked for their gift of .prizes and Mrs Coe for the use of'her residence for the overflow players. It was arranged that a euchre party should take place in July. During the serving of afternoon tea musical items were contributed by Mesdames Kettle and Lee. Life-Saving. A meeting of the Committee of the Life-Saving Club was held on Thursday, when Mr J. C. McDonald presided. Three new members were elected. The secretary reported that the Taylor Cup had been won by Miss Costello after a very good contest. It was agreed to enter a team for the Sir- John Hall Shield Competition. It was decided to hold a dance next month, and sub-committees were appointed to make the necessary arrangements. Card Evening. • The fortnightly card' evening of the Redcliffs Bowling and Croquet Club was held this week, when very large attendance enjoyed another very pleasant evening. Amongst those present were Mr and Mrs D. Coleman, Mr and Mrs J. O. H. Newbery, Mr and Mrs G. 1 Duggan, Mr and Mrs Williams, Mr and Mrs E. A. Johnson, Mr and Mrs E. G. Rawnsley, Mrs G. F. Allen, Mrs J. Lee,-Miss Pender, Mr and Mrs W. D. Bates, Mrs W. Millar, Mrs F. Truscott, Mrs A. H. Tutill, Mrs J. Hines, Mrs D. Richardson, Mrs A. F. Graham, Mrs Fountain-Barber, Mr and Mrs C. J. Russell, Mr arid Mrs C. Thomas, Mrs Stevens, Mr Seaton, Mrs Shand, Mrs and Miss Keig. • The prizes were won by Mr Martin, Mrs Thomas and Mrs Stevens and Wellsford. Old Scholars' Effort. In order to raise funds for the District High School an effort is being mado this year by the old scholars, the first meeting of which was held in the School on Thursday evening. Mr .G. A. Alexander presided and after thanking those present for their attendance, out- . lined the proposals. The headmaster, who was present, thanked the past ! scholars for their interest in their own school, and referred to the formation of lan Old Scholars' Association. Mr C. A. Rendle suggested lines for the,, pro--1 gramme, which ho thought, might consist of a dramatic as well as a'musical effoj-t. It was decided to meet again and add to the present numbers. Those present included Misses A. Partridge, B. Brown, E. Thomas, K. Thomas, J. A. Wiggins, E. Heslop, D. Abiirn, M. Aburn and Mr R. Barber. Offers of help were received from Misses Partridge, I. Lawrence, »M. Wiggins, F. Allen, D. Aburn and Messrs L. Heslop and C. L. Allen. .
