Tho death is announced of tlio Bishop of Oxford, the Rt. Rev. H. M. Burge, D.D. '

[The deceased, who was in his 63rd year, had been Bishop of Oxford since 1920. For 10 years he was headmaster of Winchester School until 1911, .when he was appointed Bishop of Southwark.]

'MR THOMAS BROOKS.

Mr Thomas : Brooks, who died on Tuesday at Fendalton, was born at Shipley, near Horsham, Sussex, Eng-land-in 1840, and came to New Zealand when eighteen years of age, in the ship Zealandia. Ho was engaged contracting for over five years on the North road, and for two years was employed in carting wool from Rakaia. In 1865, ho settled' at Brookside, where he purchased a farm of- 270 acres. -He was a successful breeder and exhibitor of Southdown sheep and Shorthorn cattle. He was a member of th© Ellesmero and Canterbury A. and P. Associations and a frequent exhibitor at. both shows. Mr Brooks was one of the earliest settlers in the Ellesmere district and gave the land on, which the Methodist Church, the public school, and library stand. The earlier settlers paid a great tribute to.him by. naming the district Brookside. He was. a staunch member of the. Methodist Church, and of a kindly disposition, he was ever ready to help in any ■ object for the welfare of the community. After forty years' farming at Brookside Mr Brooks retired—his three sons taking over his interests—and in 1909 went to live in Stratford-street, Fendalton. His wife predeceased him five years ago. He is survived by a family of three sons and four daughters to mourn their loss.

The funeral took place atHlie Wai* mairi Cemetery on Thursday, there being a large number of friends present. Wreaths were sent by the family, Brookside School Committee; Mr and Mrs E.
