RECEPTION AT WOMEN'S CLUB,
The members of the Canterbury Women's Club were nfforded an opportunity yesterday afternoon, under delightful conditions of meeting Mr "J. C. Ncwlands, a Scotsman who is giving a series of threo recitals at tho Choral Hall this weok. The warm and cosy drawing-room was gay with tawny chrysanthemums and autumn foliage, and on each table was a crystal vaso holding a spray of japonica. Mrs Holland, the president, who received the guest, wore a mole cloth costume prettily embroidered, and a black hat with ospreys and jet ornaments. After cordially welcoming Mr Newlands and wishing him an enjoyable and successful tour through New Zealand, Mrs Holland asked Mrs T. D. Kendall to contribute a pianoforte solo, an item that was greatly enjoyed and warmly applauded. In acknowledging the welcome extended to him, Mr Newlands touched briefly on the ties that bind New Zealand to the Homeland and the strongest of these, he said, was the binding link forged by the New Zealand soldiers during the war. The New Zealanders, the speaker said —and he was competent to judge, because he had spent six months of each year of the war with the Y.MC.A. in England and France, and saw much of the overseas soldiers—w.ere favourites wherever they went, probably because of their gift of ready sympathy, which went straight to the hearts of all whom they met. Mr Newlands deplored the fact that in Britain, home-life was disappearing in the cities, though family ties were as strong and old-fa hioned hospitality as warm as ever in the country districts. Many of the problems perplexing British people at present would be solved only when the women, now enfranchised, took more interest in the affairs of the nation and used their political influence wisely and well.
