TO-DAY'S LOTTERY SALE.
to fin BDifOs o? "fst rows." Sir,rr-The lottery vhich is being iaa in the interests ,of cricket and tennis is to-day to become'a challenge to the pa* songers on the streets, Their readiness to help good causes is to be confused with a gamble., For: weekg .the cupidity of people has been tickled that they can win £4OOO by investing a half-crown. But* to-day, under license of the City' Council, people are to, be postered as they pass bii lawful occasions to join , the_ lottery add try for the lucky number. This is perhaps, the first time in the history of Netr •Zealand that a City Council has licensed such a use of the streets. The douncil of Christian Congregations desires to lodge a public protest on the following grounds:—(l) The raising of money for public purposes by lottery ihas been proved over: and oyer again to be an extravagant method in itself considered, >;and a demoralising one in its reactions on the ppojilo, , Be> cent scandals in New South Wales are on record. Queensland furnishes a glaring illustration, of what no One could wish Ms country to become. The recently published' evidence of the Parliamentary Librarian (Mr Charles son) left nothing to bo desired in' tho way of condemnation; (2)The gam}>f ling habit is inimical to social welfare, and it heads directly for an extravagance that few can endure. Those who invest 2s 6d With a £4OOO prizo as a remote possibility, are being prepared for a habit which in many-a life Will prove fatal to honour. We regard sucb lotteries as this which the City Fathers have thrust on to our streets as the kindergarten for Tatt's and the toto. While entertaining the friendliest feelings for the great gameg, our Council protests against the uge of tlie lottery for their support, and advises resolute refusal to purchase as tho true attitude for to-dayi-r-Yours, etc., P.
