The backbone of the heat wave in tho Eastern States was broken to-day by breezes from tho Atlantic, the temperature falling as much as 40 degrees in five hours. One hundred and forty-nine deaths on Sunday brought the total to over 400.

Relief also came to the Middle West, but storms are doing; considerable damage in several States.

.The death roll for the 10 days' spell of intense heat, which is now returning to normal Juno weather, stood above the 500 mark on Monday night, with Philadelphia and New York the heaviest sufferers. Official records in Philadelphia place the heat toll at 186 lives.
