COASTAL STEAMERS.

WIRELESS EQUIPMENT. (PRESS ASSOCIATION" IELF.GJTAM.) AUCKLAND, Juno 9. A conference on the question of wireless installations on coastal steamers, between representatives of Auckland shipping interests and officers of the two departments of the Government service concerned in. tho matter, was opened to-day. Mr G. C. Godfrey, secretary of the Marino Department, presided, and the officials associated with him were Captain Hooper (nautical asriser to the Government) and Mr K. A. Shrimpton (chief telegraph engineer). Thero were also present Captain Hammond and. Mr G. Gow (superintendent, engineer of the Northern Steamship Company), Captain Henderson (president), and Mr Y, Kydcr (secretary of the Auckland Merchant Service Guild), and Mr 13. C. Gage (district telegraph engineer). Under the Shipping and Seamen Act Amendment Act of last aeasion, which, as in the casa of all other legislation on that subject, had to be reserved by the GovernorGeneral for the King's assent, since received, the Government has drafted regulations in regard to tho use of wireless in coastal steamers and circulated them for consideration of the interests • concerned. The Northern Steamship Company lias taken exception to some of tho requirements of these regulations, and it cleaned tcf discuss them with the Minister of Marine. The Minister, however, preferred that the discussion should take place with a body of experts, consequently he appointed the officials named as a committee to meet the representatives of the; shipping company and report to hita as to the reasonableness of tho provisions proposed in the draft-. It was tinder this order of reference that the present oonferenco was opened.\ The proceedings are not open to the Press. The whole of to-day was taken up with a, discussion of various aspects of the matter. The members of the committee will inspect.some of the Northern Company's vessels in port to seo for themselves tho difficulties as to equipment of which the company complains.
