MID-CANTERBURY

ASHBURTON. PERSONAL. The resignation of Miss M. Oakley as a member of the nursing staff at the Ashburton County Hospital was accepted at yesterday's meeting of the Board. ' The Hon. W. Xosworthy left Ashburton last evening for Wellington. General News. The following stock were slaughtered at the municipal abattoir last month: Cattlo 165, cajves 2, pigs 12, sheep 71,j, and lambs 3. Death Under Anaesthetic. The death occurred under ether, at the Oakhurst Private Hospital, yesterday, of Alice Lueinda Stock, 42 years of age, wife of Mr E. S. Stock, of Short street. Tho patient collapsed while undergoing an operation. Three doctors were in attendance, and all efforts to restore life failed. A post-mortem was ordered by the District Coroner (Mr J. Cow). Hospital Board. At the monthly meeting of the Ashburton County Hospital Board, held yesterday, there. w_erc present: Messrs • Heid (chairman), A. J. Magson, F. W. Watt; W. T. Li 11, J. Bruce, W. G. Gallagher, and W. Bryant. The statemorit of receipts and expenditure for Mav showed a credit balance of £1212 3s 3d. On behalf of the County Council, Sir Gallagher thanked tho Board for reducing its levy for the present year. Tho chairman was thanked for his report upon the Hospital Boards' Conference which was recently held in Auckland, and he was congratulated upon his appointment to the executive of the Hospital Boards' Association. - The report from the various Homes stated that during the last month 12 patients were, admitted at Malvern, and 10 discharged, leaving C; at Eakaia, 4 wero admitted and 6 discharged, leaving 1; while 4 cases were admitted at Me'thven, 2 discharged, and 2 remained. The Building Committee reported that Mr C.'S. Allen, Technical Advisor to the Department of Health, had visited tho hospital, when a trial run of tho new laundry plant was made. Subject to certain, adjustments, the laundry was passed. The annual report of the doctor of tho Waipiata Sanatorium showed that during the year ending March 31st last 46 patients were treated in the institution, six being, from the Ashburton Hospital Board district. The number of patients remaining in the Sanatorium at the commencement of the present year was '34. The secretary reported that up to the present time no applications for admission to tho Waipiata Sanatorium had been received from the Board's district. Mr F. W. Wa'tt was appointed to represent the Board on the Sanatorium Committee. Mr C. Chittock, of Oamaru, was appointed to tho position of fireman. The matter of the appointment of an assistant-secretary was referred to the chairmen of the throe committees. The reconstruction of the hospital telephone system as reported upon by the secretary was agreed to. Mall Notices. The annual social gathering of the local Presbyterians was held at the homestead, and as the night was fine, there was a record attendance. A well-ladon tea table presided over by the ladies of the congregation, was laid in a building kindly lent by Mr i Wright, and needless to say, full justice was done to good things provided. At a later stag© the gathering adjourned to the church, where a splendid programme of vocal and instrumental items was given. The Rev. Mr Marshall presided. The following contributed to the programme: ! Songs, Mesdames Templeton, Lusk, Misses Kerr, Harries, Nancy Bishop; duet, Mrs Lusk. and Miss Harries; recitations, Misses Harries, Brown, and Nancy Bishop; songs, Mrs Ford and Mrs Beasley. Mr Lusk contributed a violin solo. Mrs Lusk presided at the piano. The Rev. Mr Kirkland and tho Rev. Mr Irvine gave interesting and instructive addresses. The various items were well received, and much appreciated. Mr Marshall moved a vote -of thanks to Mr Wright for tho use of building, to the musicians, to theladies for providing refreshments, and others who had assisted to make the gathering a success. Tho frequent rains are considerably delaying the sowing of cereals in this district, and a period ,of fine weather would be welcomed by farmers. HINDS. The annual meeting of the Hinds Branch of the Plunket Society was held in the Oddfellows' Hall. Tho re- | port of tho work for the year showed chat every advantage was taken of the nurse's regular visits, and that the interest of all the members was well maintained. The Society had done good work financially assisting the fund for i the Mothers' Cottago to be built at ! o'hristchurch, and some other special ! work in addition to. the ordinary expenditure which it must meet. The balance-sheet showed a credit of over £B. Report and / ba]aixj>shee'fc were adopted. The former committee was reappointed with Mrs Cottam as president and" Mrs McCully as secretary and treasurer.

BARRHILL. The residents of Barrhill hold their fortnightly euchre tournament in the school on Saturday evening. There was a good attendance and visitors wove present from Rakaia, Lyndhurst and Lauriston. Tho prizes wore won bv Miss X. Hurst and Mr A. Malcolm. Consolation prizes were presented to Miss D'. Clark and Mr C. Clements. BUSHSIDE. A party of six local residents went oi a wild pig hunting expedition last Saturday, on tho "Wintcrslow" station, and were fortunate in having good sport. Pigs wero very numerous. The wild pigs are not only dostructivo t) lambs, but to fences also, and station owners arc pleased to see them killed. A surprise party visited Mr John Gundrv- in his new home one evening recently. Tho time passed pleasantly, with dancing interspersed with cards and musical items. Songs were given by Messrs J. and W. Chapman, C. Joli, and E. Newman, and Mr L. Hicks, jun., gave an impersonation of Sir Harry Lauder in some of his old favourite songs. Mr R. Green gave a I sword dance and Mr A. Green a sailor's hornpipe. A Maori haka was given by Messrs C. Joli and A. Wright. Slipper was served in tho dining-room and the singing of "For He's a Jolly Good Fellow" terminated a very pleasant evening. METHVEN. A meeting of Mr Jas. Carr's presentation committee was held on Friday evening, Mr Alex. Man- presiding. Tho hon. secretary (Mr J. F. Stone) rcportod on the total amount handed in by collectors for tho fund, up to date. This* report was. considered highly satisfactory. It was unanimously resolved that the. presentation take the form of an English motor-car, to be mado at a suitable function on June 19th. It war, resolved to issue invitations to the Hon. Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and members of various local bodies. Messrs Harrison, McAnulty, and Marr wero appointed a sub-compiittco to purchase the car. Tho arrangements for the social evening were left in the hands o? Messrs Elliott and Stone. RAKAIA. After several fine days followfollowing frosty nights, the weather yesterday was "dull and overcast. A cold south-west wind blew during the forenoon, and in the'; afternoon this was accompanied by drizzling rain. MOUNT SOMERS. At the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers Road Board there wero present: Messrs M. C. Harper (chairman), ; Thomas Bright, James R. Lockhard, J. W. Comyns, and E. J. Waugh. Mr Harper was unanimously reappointed (chairman. Betfore i?mnmencing tho ordinary business the chairman proposed votes of sympathy with the families of the late Prime Minister and of the lata Mr John Hood. The motions were carried unanimously, members standing. The residents of Patton's road, Mount Somers. wrote complaining of the bad state of tho road and asking for improvement. The letter was received. It was decided to. grant the assistance asked by Messrs Carney and Wilson to cut out a fresh water channel through-Mrs Wilson's property at Alford Forest. The County Council notified that it had decided 1 to pay Md [ a dozen for birds' heads killed during j tile coming season. Mr Them as (Stev- : enson was granted permission to erect a telephone wire from his residence on the usual conditions. The overseer was authorised to pipe the creek crossing the. reserve road at Alford Forest. Mr Comyns gavo notice that at the next meeting lie would move that a.rate of one halfpenny in the £ be strack'on the capital value of all rateable property. The Men's Club is in receipt of prizes from Mrs Wood (for the best--attend-ance, of junior members) and Mr Bull (for the member gaining most points in the question boxes). At the last meeting of the club a lecture was given by P. 11. Jones, the subject being ''Weather Forecasting." ' ,
