In olden days a butcher stood in the pillory in Southwark for selling bad meat, while the meat was burned to windward of him. A vintner had a part of his bad wine poured over his head, and was forced to drink the rest. In a decree issued in France a few centuries ago, it is directed that "a funnel .shall be placed in the mouth of any man or woman convicted of selling watered milk, and "that the said alleged milk shall he poured-down said funnel, until such time as a doctor shall declare the culprit incapable of swallowing any more without danger of death." For breaches of the law against selling liquor during prohibited hours, three Canadian . saloon-keepers were sen. fenced by the mayor,of the town to at-tend-church eyery Sunday. Every Alonday they were ordered to go before the mayor and present certificates from the preachers certifying that they had been present. .
Dora Labbetto is rightly - considered one of the most artistic sopranos at tho moment singing for the gramophone. She has no airs and graces, no vocal tricks with which to daazle her, hearers, but she compels respect and admiration for/ her wise choice of songs and the excellent taste in which she sings them. Her latest records are of Purcell's old favourite, "I Attempt from Love's Sickness to Fly." There is a delicacy and refinement investing Mis 3 Labbette's singing thmt easily account for the high esteem in which she IB held by those who choose their records with care. The companion song is Liza Lohmann'e "Oh, Tell Me, Nightingale," which is wholly to Miss Labbette's liking. It is evident in this, as in practically'all'her songs, that she makes herself a complete mistress of the message to be convoyed,, by both word and music.
