COUNTY COUNCILS.

WAIMAIRI. The Waimairi County Council met yesterday afternoon. Present: Crs. JY Seymour (chairman), I!. W. Hawke, ,W. P. Spencer, .C. E. Cross, H. Paterson, G. Shipley, T. O. rvewnham, and "W.'' A. Xieholls. With regard to tho repairing of -North road, it, was decided to leave the matter in the hands of the foreman to get the work done as soon as possible. Tho County Clerk-reported, that since the last meeting of tho Council, building permits for trie following values had been issued:—Styx riding £230, Marshland £llOO, Avon £3330, Papanui £l5O, Waimairi £795, 'endalton £2565, Ricoartoa £3505, ana Middleton £SO. The County fund account, showed a credit balance of £6807 9s t>d. A letter was received frcrn Sir Francis, Bell .asking. the< Council to assist towards' tho fund for tho erection of a memorial to tho late Mr Massey. ' Cr. Cross asked if the Ccuncil could legally subsciibo to the fund. Cr. Hawke said that tho Council could g-< as far as its unauthorised expenditure tut no further, unless it was granted permission by special legislation. Cr. Paterson said he thought it would be better for'tho Council to make a donation. This would bo preferable to issuing subscription lists. Cr. Spencer said lie thought it would be Uetter to issue subscription lists. There were a lot of residents who were not ratepayers who would be pleased to subscribe. Tho Council decided to approve of tho appeal, but to hold over the question of raising funds in tho County in tho meantime.

The Lands and Survey Department wrote 'ptating that the- trustees of the Waimairi Cemetery }iad lesigned - owing to pressuro of private business, and asking if the Council would «gree to the cemetery being vested urder its control. It "was decided to reply asking the Department to endeavcur to .appoint new trustee:-: Mr C.'E. Cross was suggested as rno. He nignified his willingness to act..Mr D.- G. Sullivan, M.P., and the Hon. The letter continued: "We uiiderstind that a suggestion has been made •that in some way or other the city of ithristchurch. is either legally or morally responsible for the payment of e?me portion of the above amount, but the Town., Clerk, Christchurch, informs our cliente that Hagley Park was taken over by Christchurch on the express condition that no alteration, was rradc in the then existing warraritp."
