TRENTHAM SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
REPORT OF EXECUTIVE. The fifth annual report and balance-sheet of the Tfrentham Scholarship War Fund, covering "the operations of the fund during the year ended March Sist, 1925, shows: — Applications for 171 bursaries were received, and were dealt with.at meetings held in December, 1924. The following awards applicable during the year 1925 wero made:—
Since the awards were made, it has been found necessary ' for various reaßons,_ and sometimes at the request of the applicant, to cancel eleven grants, totalling £265. It will again be noted that the amount available annually ovet a period of twenty years is £2840 IOSj and that tho sum actually awarded exceeds this amount by £930. This has been made possible by the generous assistance of the Canteen and Regimental Trust Fund Board, which has allotted the sum of £looo'per annum for the next ten years for the purposes of Trcntham bursaries, but even with this generous .assistance the executive found it necessary, on account of the large increase in the number of applications, to reduce the' individual amounts and to limit the maximum awards to £SO. A close scrutiny of the work done by the bursars during the past year was undertaken by Mr J. Caughley and Dr. Marsdch, of thft Education Department, who are members of the- Executive Committee, and disclose a highly satisfactory state of affairs. These gentlemenv report that ill every case it appears that the assistance granted is being taken full advantage of by the bursars. The' balance-sheet shows that the assets of the fund are:—
During the year under review, tlie sum Of £3477 7a Od was paid to bursars. The income from the fund by way of interest was £1679 lis sd; this, augmented by the donation of from the Canteen and Regimental Trust Fund Board, leaves a deficit of £IO3B 17s 7d, representing excess of expenditure over income for the year, which has been debited to the fund-account.
