NEW ZEALAND CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP. i - , \ CANTERBURY V. , OTAGO. - The chess match by telegraph in the New ! Zealand Chess, Clubs' championship between J Canterbury, and Otago was concluded on ' Saturday evening, slightly-in favour of the southern club. Of the twelve games included in Ihe Dominion Otago won five and Canterbury four, obo was drawn, and two unfinished positions will be decided by adjudication. One is in favour of Canterbury, and the other shows better prospects for Otago, though a draw may result. At the best, Canterbury can but hope for a draw, while the 'final result niay be a win for Otago by a narrow margin. The southerners' middle board players • proved 1 too strong for their, opponents, a sequence of four wins having an important bearing on the match total. The extra fire teamamen for Otago in' the annual ordinary, match between the two clubs also did much better than their opponents, winning three games and losing only one, the other being drawn. Coombes, however, with queen, rook and a bishop, bearing on his opponent's king's quarters, held decided possibilities .for a mate. King had to exercise vigilance, and it was not until well into the close of Saturday that he got completely rid of the menace, and then had

Neville won a piece on the first sight, nnd, gradually wearing his opponent dims by forceful play, received his eppexunt** resignation on the call of time. Board No. 12— K. S. Shiilito r. W, H.
