Mathieson and Gerald got away in a promising dash, but tho soft ground and greasy bail lost them their chance. Ashburton (22) v. Rakaia (0). Ashburton commenced the p'ay, and for the most part kept Rakaia- in their own territory. An attempt on the part of Stills to open the Red's scoring account with p. penalty kick faiied. The game did not progress much further however, until Stills dropped a penalty kick from within the vicinity of the Rakaia goal. LEAGUE. COMPETITION MATCHES. The competitions in each tho six grades of the Canterbury Rugby Football League were continued on Saturday, when the sixth round was decided, ■'the conditions wero excellent and there wero some interesting panics in al) grades. The principal attractions wero the senior championship fixture* at Monica Park and the other gronnds. The leading teams maintained their successes, though the Hornby team were fortunate in beating Sydenham, as the latter team save, the better display. ■ Addington had no difeculty in locating Linwood on the lattcr's "round, and tho Waiiliairi team gavo a. , fine display against Marists B at Papanui. Marists A were superior to AVoolston and achieved an easy win.

The positions of the various teams in the senior championship are:—

Hornby (11) v. Sydenham (9). The opening exchanges let tho Hornby (blacks) Forwards away with a, loose rush, but tho Sydenham (blues) backs evaded tho big forwards and, wuntinj high, P. O'Connorsent p% t° the' Blacks' twenty-five. An infringement gave Sydenham a penalty clcS3 in, which F. Warr put over. W. Lc Warne secured possession from the kick-out. He made ground with a solo run and sent 111 to F. Henry, tho last-named passing to J. Parkes, who scored a tiy, which ho converted. F. Warr, with F. Tonkin and P. O'Connor, effectually smothered the slow passing of the Blacks' Lacks, and tho Sydenham forwards swept through with a great rush. The Sydenham forwards were con'.rolhn<r the. ball from the (-crum, and E. Falgar, at half, was giving his backs opportunity. F. Tonkin,. with a fine butst through, had Hornby defending hard. The Blacks were penalised and F. Warr kicked his second goat. L. Zimmerman got Olear, and passing in to J. Parkes, tho latter scored wide out, F. Henry failing to goal. F. Warr pierced tho defence with a grsat cut-in, but rin straight into W. Davies and lest a fine scoring chance just prior ,to tho bell for the interval, with the scores: Hornby 8, Sydenham i. Tonkin kick through and dribble the ball over the Tho Hcrnby full-back nulled him down, and the referee awarded a try for obstruction. F. A\arr failed to goal, the ball striking th? post. Tho Blacks' forwards got going in earnest, but hun" to tho ball and loat ecorms chances. "The team play of the Blacks was poor. From a scrum, A. Mackie cut through and passed fast to J. Parkes. Tho latter threw the ball to W. Stewart, who dived ovor near tho corner for a great trv, which J. Parkes failed to convert. H. Dvmond sent the Blacks back and the ball out to W. Stewart, the latter raced down the far line, but P. O Connor got to -him and bundled the Hornby bac* out just before the final bell ring. The scores were: Hornbv 11 points (three tries one converted) to 0 points (one try and three penalty goals). Mr W. Healey was | referee.

Waimairi (22) v. Marists B (13). Marists B kicked off and took play to their opponents' twentv-five, where the Greens were awarded a penalty; Burns'a kick failed. A good kick by Mitchell gained ground, and Itossiter and Ortc.i following up, caught Archer, the Marists full-back in possession. Tight play followed from which the Greens were penalised for handling in the scrum, -itchell kicked a food goal. "Wainwiri 2, Marists 0. The Marists forwards, led by O'Shaughnessy, Hanrahan and O'Connell, headed n- rush, ond from a scramble near the line, the last-named scored, for Burns to goal. Marist 5, Waimairi 2-. TFaimairi then attacked, and Mitcnetl put in a good' run, beating a man before passing to Ortor., who scored. The kick failed. Later McCarthy put the Greens on th« attack by a,

good kick, but a force-down resulted.' Plav was then transferred to the other end, and both Mitchell and Pcarco wore within an ace ofecotuis, but good tacKtng, especially by .Kobws and Brittendcn, kent them out. Pahi soon set his backs going,"and Mitchell kicked up near the Msrists goal, but Mc•Larthv cleared just in time. The Greens had a turn at attack and MoCormack scored for Burns to goal. Waimairi 12, Marist 10. Pahi- then set his backs going. They carried plav to the Greens' line but a force-down resulted. Tight forward play followed, and from a. scrum. Pahi let the. ball out, Goodall making a dash for the line, but Robins saved a score by a great...tackle. The B'aek and Whites continued to vress and Pahi passed to Pearce. who transferred to Hltcbel], who sent Ferris over for a good try. The kick f»iled. Waimairi continued to attack. Goodall potting a great goal from the twentvfive. Waimairi 17, Marists 10. Marists now had a turn at attack, and TBums picked up in tho loose just inside half-way. Smith made a feeble attempt to stop him. and he* scored in (he corner. His kick failed. AVaimairi 17, Marists 13. Sisson obtained the ball but went over the dead ball line. Shortly after, a passing rush by Pahi, Goodall and Ferris resulted in the last-named Fcorinsr for Mitchell to goal. Waimairi 22, Marists 13.

Marists A (33) v. Woolston (5). Marists A and Woolston met on the "Ko. 2 ground at Monica Park. The former .siarted off with a great rush, and fast running let H. Mullins in, and he. sent J. O'Loughlin on to score. C. Fitzgerald failed to goal. Pring, Wakefield and Imcson burst through for Woolston, but O'Longiiliu's speed allowed him to save. Piper failed to collect a cross ond C. Batchelor dashed in and was over tho line with a brilliant dive. E. H. Ellis goaled. B. Stapley stopped a strong Green attack, in which E : . Fitzgerald, C. Fitzgerald and Mullins took part. Mullins was injured in a leg in a hard tackle and had to retire, E. Batchelor coming on in his 6lead. C. Batchelor dashed away with a jinky cut-in and went past two men before sending O'Loughlin on to score. Ellis's shot was wide. Woolston made a dash, but the Greens' forwards soon returned, and clean handling by Ellis and Flood saw the latter score behind the posts. E. Fitzgerald's kick hit the cress-bar and bounced over. O'Loughlin used his speed to get a nice try from a passing Tush. Ellis converted. The Woolston backs attacked by a passing rush, and from a melee, G. Maine scored. C. Stapley goaled. The ball was thrown about freely by the Marists' backs, but there was no further score in tho first spell, which ended: Marists A 21, Wooiston 5. Marists rushed off again in the second half, iind the ball travelled from a scrum to C. Fitzgerald, who fooled fne Woolston five-eighths and scored. He also converted. The Woolston forwards, led by Pring <and Imeson, made a break through the defence, and the latter looked likely to score In a dribbling rush, but knocked on, and the chance was lost. Somo fast passing ended in C. Fitzgerald sending Peterson on to scbrc. Tho kick failed. A Blue forward kicked into Brosnahan's hands, . and he dropped a good goal from -the field. The Greens' backs set off in another rush and after Brosnahan, Blazey and Batchelor had each .handled twice, E. Fitzgerald scored near the posts and Bateman converted. The final score wa.s. Addington (23) v. Lin-wood (9). The game between Addington and Linwood was ployed at Linwoc-d Park. Tho eastern suburbs opened briskly. In- a. loose, rush F. Harris scored for the home team, the effort at goal being rcsultless. Fast passinffby tho Addington backs enabled S. Symister to score for A. Collie to goal. The visiting backs were showing speed and a fast passing rush enabled R. Maync to score, and shortly after the same player aglin scored, neither try being, converted. The western suburbs added a further" try before half-timo when the scores were Addington 14, Linwood 3. Addington _ adopted the offensive on resuming and 'from a passing rush O'Mallcy scored an unconverted" try. A forward rush, by liinwood C ended in C. Moulin scoring, no goal resulting. E. Mayna and A. Green each scored a try for Addington, neither score being converted. Just before timo E. Bunanga seniors played Blackball, before a large crowd, on Blackball grounds., and won by 11' points to 5. The half-time scores were 6-0 in favour of the winners, Oust and. W. Armstrong scoring unconverted tries. In the second half Citst scored again for Runanga and Pumell kicked a- penality goal, while,Dodds crossed for Blackball and kicked a penalty goal. ASSOCIATION. ENGLISH CUP TIES. The Canterbury Football Association's competitions were suspended on Saturday last to allow of tho first round cf tho English Cup being played. Although the grounds were heavy, the weather was fine, though a fairly stiff breeze was Entries from the whole twelve senior grade teams comprising the A and B sections had been received, and of these, four drew byes. They were Sunnysidc, Xomads and Western in the A grllde, and Kaiapoi in the B grade. After Saturday's contests, four teams in each, section now remain to fight, out fho 6coond round of the English Cup. Some extraordinary results were the outcome c{ the first round. Chief of these was tho unexpected defeat of Rangers by Thistle at English Park by the odd goal in three. Equally sensational was tho win of Technical Old Boy 3 over Lyttellon on the Mental Hospital ground by four goals to three. Tho watersiders were unfortunate in having to fiold a woak team. At Linwood Park, a fast game between Villa and Linwood produced a win for the latter by two goats to one. Addington Workshops' put up a sterling fight again3t St. Albans, but were defeated after a great game by three goals to one. The venue was St. Albans Park. Thistle (2) v. Rangers (1). Thistle kicked off against the. wind and forced play clown the centre. Under pressure, Lusk mis-kicked and Thomas beat Pern- with a simple shot after three minutes'" play. This early reverse put Rangers on their mettle, and iCorman opened an attack on the left. Ives slammed the ball to' goal but Barwel! failed to clinch the movement. The Scots retaliated with Mulcahey and Patterson prominent. Tho winger squared to'goal and Thomas, racing through, put Thistle two goals up. In following play Thistle were kept continually defending but Faiconer was in brilliant form in goal and successfully parried shots from Harwell, Korman and Ives. Frons the left, Norman placed to Barwell, who made ground and finished with sv shot which struck the crossbar with, terrific force. Rangers maintained pressure and bombarded the Thistle goal, but Falconer was brilliant in defence. Halftime was called with Rangers attacking, and the score: Thistle 2. Rangers 0. The second half oponed with a Rangers attack. Ives mado ground on the left and placed to Norman, who sent in a hot shot which Falconer gathered!, v&tto and Gibson led a further Rangers' raid, and from a scramble in tho Thistle, goal in which Falconer was injured, Ciibson found the net. Rangers made desperate efforts to score the equaliser, but the. Thistle defence held and time was called with the score: Thistle 2, JKangers 1. Referee, Mr F. Campbell. It was subsequently found that Falconer, the Thistle goal-keeper, had fractured his collaT-bone when he came into collision with the goalpost. He had played the remaining fifteen minutes in this condition, and saved many shots.

Linwood (2) v. Villa, (1). Playing at Linwood Park, Villa, won the toss and Linwod kicked off against the wind. Following a fine combined movement by Graham, Spcnce and Chappie, Villa were hard pressed. Tanner placed well forward, and from a melee in goal, Spenco shot through! Villa retaliated on tho left. C. Ranson plaocd to BoTry, but Bird intercepted a pass to the centre and returned play to half-way. Except for nn occasional breakaway by Linwood, the play was monopolised by Villa for a period, but Maynard and Bird defended in great style, men Ward initiated a sharp attack. on the Linwood left. Graham drove-over, but G. Johnston cleaied in the nick of time for Villa; Half-timo was called with the score: Linwood 1, Villa 0. ~ On resuming', Villa set up a strong attack with Whitehead and Share prominent. H-. Johnston snapped up and hcokedi, over to goal, but Berry headed just outside. Linwood took a, hand, and for a timo Villa were kept defending. Linwood broke through and Chappie registered with .a cross-shot. The game becaino very fust with' >slla having slightly the best of the p!ay. Technical Old Boys (4) v. Lyttelton (3). -There was a good attendance of spectators at 'the Mental Hospital ground to witness the cup match between Technical Old Boys and Lyttelton. Technical kicked off, but Beal put Lyttelton attacking. A .sharp tackle by Cawthrey repulsed for Technical, but a free kick for hands brought play back.' Parle' shot behind and Toohnical retaliated on the left, with O'Loughlin prominent. A sharp centre, followed, but Armstrong shot na"st from a good position. A corner to Technical was cleared, but CTiechart immediately .returned. Poor shooting was again in evidence in the final shot. The winger closed. on ffoai and put Lyttelton one up with a good shot. Prom a Lyttelton attack, with Wilson, Smyth, and Parlo. prominent, Technical broke away v on the left. Armstrong accented a transfer and levelled the scores from close in. Halftime was called with the scores: Technical Old Boys 1, Lyttelton 1. Fast exchanges opened the second sped) with Lyttelton the more dangerous. Wibon shot past, and from the goai-kick Technical broke away. Offside spoilt the movement, and from the kick Lytteltcn attacked, but Smyth's final shot went wide. Lyttelto? carno* Again, and from a cross Pari© found the net. ThtH reverte livened up tho Technical attack. Playing well, J. Tiechart sent liis wing away, and from a centre Smith again levelled the scores. Technical', playing with improved combination, kept up tho attack. Muirson drove well down for O'Loughlin to clom on goal and give Technical the lead. A moment afterwards tricky play* by J. Tiechart gave Annstvong possession, and lie put Technical two goals up. Lyttelton attacked strongly from the centre kick and a combined movement .by Smyth and Wilson gave Parlo possession, and he regwfcsred with a low shot.. Time was called with the Bc'ore: Technical Old Boys' 4, Lyttelton 3. PRIMARY SCHOOLS. ASHBURTON COMPETITION. I Two senior grade Association games were played on the Ashburton Domain on Sa.tur-1 day afternoon in the Mid-Canteroirry Football Sub-Association's competitions. In the mitch between Bering square and Methven, the former, in the first_ten minutes, scored' with a good shot by n. Pearee,' and at hail-time the score was i-aring square 2, Methven nil, the second goal having been shot by X. Johnson. In the first ten minutes of the second half. Baring square were hemmed in their own territory, and after a centre movement, Hoodie (Baring- square) mistook the direction and placed a goal, for Methven. From this on Baring square had all tbo beet of the play, and three more goals were shot by H. A. Johnson. It was it fast game all through'. Th<« game ended in a win for Baring square by 5 to one.. Mr Moodie waß referee. Wakanui, in their match with Ashburton "Wanderers, displayed decidedly the better combination and kept the bail constantly in

the "Wanderers' territory, though the letter I put up a hard fight. A lot of good individual work was shown. G. Brown scored for Wakanui early in the game, and at half. time the score was, Waknnui; 1, Wandeiers nil. A good shot by Brown got homo to tho net soon after the"iesumption, and this was followed by C.
