ASHBURTON COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tho monthly meeting 0 f the' A&hburton County Council wag held yesterday. Present —Crs. W. G. Gallagher (chairman), W. T. Lill. F. Frampton, H. B. C. Withell, D. J. Morrow, J.' Moore, J. Liimhie, A. T. Lille,y, T. S. Harrison, A. J. Magson, and C. Reid. The chairman stated that the Hon. ~W. Nosworthy had been -written to asking for Government assistance in obtaining a light at the Yaletta railway station. Ho had forwarded a. reply from tho Minister of Railways stating that funds -were not available at present, but that the matter would receive further consideration when deciding-, the relative urgency of various works. Tho engineer reported that while a large number of ratepayers had cleared their races, othera had failed to do so, or the races had been -badly cleaned or left in a rough state. Authority had been received from the Main Highways Board to proceed with the work of redecking the Rangitata traffic bridge, and the -work would bo put in hand as scon as the work at the Pudding Hill dam was completed.

Tho chairman explained that the amount they would get for the timber for which applications had been made would amount to about £IOOO, and he thought the Council should approach the Government to put in a railway siding at Hackthorno. It was decided that th« Council should arrange for an official opening of the M>~thven high-pressure water supply. Cr. Harrison stated that the Methven people would be glad to co-operate with the Council in the matter

It wa3 resolved to support the Southland Progress League in the matter of a separate Highways Board for the South Island, and to pre 33 for an amendment in tho Act so that the County Council should get n £ for £ subsidy on Toad maintenance work. The resolution of June 2nd, 1916, granting subsidies to Domain and Cemetery Boards was rescinded, and a motion was carried that the whole matter of future grants bo reviewed.

It was decided to grant the Methven Domain Board a sum of £oo and tho Ashburton Domain Board £123. It was agreed to grant free water to the Pendarves Hall Commfttee. The Wakanui and Mount Somers Road Boards applied for concrete pipes for culverts. The applications were granted. Pipes were also granted to the Coldstream Road Board. The Public Works Department wrote asking that a flat rate, instead of so much per 1000 gallon*, bo charged for water for the Methven railway station, the Courthouse, police station, and the post office. It wa3 decided to make enquiries as to the water charges in places situated as Jietnven was. ,_j The tender of Mr F. Peter was accepted for Reserve 2567 at Cavendish. Cr.
